A used Mercedes-Benz GLE sits between the compact GLC and the full-size GLS, so the year split still matters: 2016-2019 W166 trucks versus the 2020-and-newer V167 redesign with a roomier cabin and optional air suspension. Most shoppers want a GLE350 or GLE450 with a clean VIN on early V167 campaigns before they talk about Coupe roof lines or AMG badges. Squareback SUV versus Coupe is a cargo decision, not a status one.
We pulled GLE filings and review specs in mid October 2026. Car and Driver lists a 255-hp turbo 2.0-liter four on the GLE350, a 362-hp turbo inline-six on the GLE450, a twin-turbo V-8 path on the GLE580, a nine-speed automatic, rear- or all-wheel drive depending on trim, and up to about 7,700 pounds of towing when properly equipped. The Coupe sheds cargo for a rounded roof. Decode the VIN with our Mercedes VIN decoder, then compare the smaller sibling in our used Mercedes GLC buying guide without cloning that open. Clear campaigns with our Mercedes-Benz recall check by VIN.
2016-2019 W166 versus 2020 and newer V167
The 2020 redesign is the nicer daily driver for most families. A wider cabin, better screens and an optional third row on the SUV body separate it from the older W166 GLE that still tows but feels like a prior-decade truck inside. MotorTrend's GLE coverage and Consumer Reports on Mercedes-Benz help with ownership context after you clear safety campaigns. So, our take: a 2021-2024 GLE350 or GLE450 with documented early-build work is the sweet spot for most buyers, while a clean late W166 can still make sense if the price reflects the older cabin and you accept that the newer MBUX layout will not be part of the pitch.
Recalls that show up on GLE VINs
NHTSA recall 20V-329 covers certain 2020 GLE450 vehicles whose shock absorber piston seals may not meet product specs; dealers replace front struts and rear shocks on the affected trucks. 20V-627 covers certain 2020 GLE-Class vehicles whose drive shaft locking ring may not have been mounted as specified, which can disconnect the transfer case from the rear axle and stall the truck. 20V-671 covers certain 2020-2021 GLE350 and GLE450 five-seat trucks whose middle second-row seat belt buckle can drop below the cushion. Ask which outcome your VIN got and get the repair order with the VIN on it. An undocumented clunk from the driveline on an SUV this expensive is a gamble we would walk away from.
Air suspension, when equipped, is a comfort feature that can also be an ownership cost. Ask for a cold-park height check and a scan for suspension warnings before you fall for the soft ride on a short test loop. Coupe models skip the optional third row, so confirm the body style on the window sticker instead of trusting the listing photos alone.
Fleet history, title and price
GLEs also show up as corporate and black-car units. A recall lookup will not tell you that. Read the history carefully, and treat a suspiciously new carpet smell near the Gulf Coast as a flood check before you fall for the AMG Line wheels. Mercedes-Benz USA's CPO page says certified cars get a multi-point inspection and that dealers perform outstanding recall campaigns before the sale, which is a real argument for CPO on a late V167. CARFAX says its reports pull title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Honestly, a seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is worth nothing on a mid-size luxury SUV.
