ESL Federal Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public automobile loan rates page. On Nov. 5, 2026 that page showed APR as low as 7.54% for new and current used vehicles (model years 2025-2027, terms up to 66 months), with higher floors for older age bands, up to 10.00% for seven-year-and-older vehicles on terms up to 63 months. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, pull a history report before you sign.
What ESL's page says
I read ESL's automobile rates page on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed APR-as-low-as tiers by vehicle age, including:
- New and Current Used (2025-2027): 7.54% up to 66 months, rising to 8.04% for 76-84 month terms.
- Two-Year-Old Vehicles (2024): 7.59% up to 66 months, rising to 8.09% for 76-84 month terms.
- Three-Year-Old Vehicles (2023): 7.59% up to 66 months, rising to 8.09% for 76-84 month terms.
- Four-Year-Old Vehicles (2022): 7.99% up to 66 months, rising to 8.09% for 76-84 month terms.
- Five- and Six-Year-Old Vehicles (2020-2021): 7.75% up to 63 months, rising to 8.40% for 67-72 month terms.
- Seven Years and Older (2019 and older): 10.00% APR as low as, terms up to 63 months.
Footnotes said rates are subject to credit evaluation, a lien is placed on the vehicle, and terms over 66 months need a $15,000 minimum. I did not find a public CARFAX mandate on that page.
Why you should still pull a report
Older ESL tiers already cost more. A rebuilt brand or odometer issue can change insurance and whether ESL will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX, NMVTIS versus CARFAX and financing a rebuilt title car guides cover the gaps.
Questions to ask ESL before you sign
- Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
- Which age band does my VIN fall into after you verify the title?
- Does a salvage or rebuilt brand change the advance or deny the loan?
- Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?
Term length versus vehicle age
Longer terms on newer cars show lower monthly payments and higher total interest. ESL's footnote on a $15,000 minimum for terms over 66 months matters if you are financing a cheaper older car. Do not stretch term to hide a problem title. Fix the title question first.
Private-party and out-of-state titles
Ask ESL how they handle private-party purchases and out-of-state titles before you put a deposit on a Facebook listing. Bring a matching VIN on the title, bill of sale and history report. Our how to read a CARFAX report guide helps you mark the pages a loan officer usually asks about.
On the day you buy
Match every VIN location to the title and the history report. Confirm the seller ID matches the title name. Keep a dated copy of ESL's automobile rates page with your file, because posted APRs change.
What to bring anyway
ESL prices by vehicle age and term. Bring your own history report and a NHTSA recall printout so a late title-brand surprise does not blow up funding after you already negotiated the car.
What to do with ESL's age bands
Print or screenshot the age band that matches your VIN before you shop cars. If you are looking at a 2019-or-older vehicle, budget for the 10.00% as-low-as tier and a shorter max term, then decide if the car still makes sense after a clean history check.
If you are looking at a 2025-2027 vehicle at 7.54% as low as, still run recalls and a history report. New enough to get the best ESL tier is not the same as problem-free. Our what CARFAX does not show guide lists gaps that still bite newer cars.
Dealers sometimes quote ESL payments before the title is checked. Do not sign a purchase order that assumes the low end of the range until ESL confirms the VIN's age band and brand status in writing.
Keep the history report with the loan file so a later title surprise has a paper trail. Confirm the seller ID matches the title name before ESL funds.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
