Fiat VIN Decoder: How to Read 3C3 and ZFA Codes

A U.S.-market Fiat VIN usually starts with 3C3 on older gasoline 500 cars built in Toluca, Mexico, or ZFA on Italy-coded Fiats such as many 500X and 500e filings. Positions 4-8 carry body and engine clues, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls and a history report before you pay for a used Fiat.

We ran Fiat patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder in mid October 2026 because private ads still paste a Jeep Renegade VIN onto a 500X listing, and because Stellantis siblings share plants without sharing the same WMI. Fiat sits in Stellantis with Jeep and Alfa Romeo, but the codes stay Fiat-specific. New to the 17 positions? Start with how to decode a VIN. For open campaigns after the decode, use our Fiat recall check by VIN.

Positions 1-3: 3C3 Toluca gas 500 versus ZFA Italy codes

vPIC maps ZFA to Fiat / Stellantis Europe passenger cars and 3C3 to Chrysler de Mexico Toluca passenger cars that include Fiat among other brands. A clean 2014 Fiat 500 Pop pattern starting 3C3CFFAR decoded to Toluca, Mexico, a 1.4-liter four, front-wheel drive and a two-door hatch. A 2016 Abarth pattern starting 3C3CFFFH returned the same plant with Abarth trim. So if a seller calls every Fiat "Italian-built," believe the WMI and the plant letter instead of the brochure story. ZFA is the Italy WMI you will see on many later Fiat filings, including 500e-class cars and 500X-family VINs, while the old U.S. gas 500 run is the one that repeatedly lands on Toluca with 3C3.

Positions 4-8: 500, 500X, 500L, 500e and the engine field

The middle block encodes model family, body, restraints and engine. On our Toluca 500 samples, displacement filled in as 1.4 liters with four cylinders. Car and Driver's 500e page lists a 117-hp motor and a battery of roughly 37 kWh on the current electric car, which is a different animal from the 2012-2019 gas hatch. Honestly, a 500X shares a lot of hardware with the Jeep Renegade, which is useful context and still does not make the VIN a Jeep WMI. A blank model field means you verify the door jamb and window sticker yourself, not that the VIN is fake.

Positions 9-11: check digit, year and plant

Position 9 is the check digit in 49 CFR 565.15. Typos usually fail; cloned VINs can pass. Position 10 is the model year (E was 2014, G was 2016, R was 2024 in samples we checked). Position 11 is the plant. Toluca showed clearly on the gas 500 runs. Match the dash plate to the door jamb and the title before you argue about Pop versus Lounge or Abarth stickers.

Recalls that follow Fiat VINs

Always run the full VIN. Campaigns are tied to build windows, not just the year badge. NHTSA recall 24V-510 covers certain 2019-2023 Fiat 500X and 2024 500e vehicles (plus related Stellantis models) whose seat belt buckle switch sensor may be improperly connected so the front air bag does not deploy as intended. 24V-474 covers certain 2014-2019 Fiat 500 cars whose tire pressure warning light may not illuminate as intended. On newer 500e cars, 25V-715 covers certain 2024-2025 cars whose headlight aim adjuster was not covered as intended. Look, an open air bag campaign on a city hatch is not a "drive it home and sort it later" purchase. Our NHTSA recall check by VIN guide explains incomplete versus completed status.

We've seen seller PDFs that quietly omit open Stellantis campaigns. Pull the recall check yourself.

After the decode: history, and what it costs

For model context, Car and Driver's 500e page and Consumer Reports on Fiat are useful starting points. None of a VIN decode shows salvage brands, odometer jumps, auction damage or insurance claims. Those come from DMV, insurer, auction and shop feeds, which CARFAX describes as the basis of its reports. Pull your own copy. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
