Used Genesis GV80 Buying Guide: Engines, Recalls, History

A used Genesis GV80 is a mid-size luxury SUV that undercuts German rivals on price while loading the cabin with features, but only if you clear fuel pipe and fuel pump recalls by VIN first. Every GV80 for the U.S. market is the 2021-and-newer generation with Smartstream powertrains. In mid October 2026, treat fuel smell on a cold start as a stop-the-deal issue until 26V-229 and related pump campaigns show completed.

Car and Driver lists a 300-hp turbo 2.5-liter four, a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6, and a hotter 409-hp e-supercharged 3.5 on the Coupe path, with an eight-speed automatic and AWD on most years (rear-drive arrives later in the run). Towing tops out around 6,000 pounds. The optional third row is kids-only. Decode the VIN with our Genesis VIN decoder, clear campaigns with our Genesis recall check by VIN, and keep our buying used car from dealer checklist or used Jeep Grand Cherokee buying guide nearby if you are cross-shopping mid-size SUVs.

What years and trims to target

There is no prior U.S. GV80 generation to mix up. Early 2021-2022 trucks can be strong deals if fuel campaigns are closed and the service history is thick. Later trucks add cabin screen updates and more third-row availability on some 2.5T trims. IIHS rates the 2024 GV80 if you want crash-test context after the recall list is clean. Consumer Reports covers the model line for ownership notes. So, our take: a 2022-2024 2.5T or 3.5T with closed fuel campaigns and a pre-purchase inspection beats a loaded Coupe with missing Hyundai/Genesis paperwork.

Fuel pipe, fuel pump and cluster campaigns

NHTSA recall 26V-229 covers about 94,760 Genesis vehicles including certain GV80 models whose fuel may leak at the pipe connection to the fuel rail. Dealers inspect and tighten or replace the pipe. Letters began in July 2026 under Genesis code 033G. 24V-282 covers about 31,440 2022-2023 GV70, GV80, G80 and G90 vehicles whose fuel pump may fail and cut drive power; it expands earlier recall 23V-630. Cluster display software campaigns such as 26V-019 can blank the instrument panel until the audio-video navigation software updates over the air or at a dealer. Earlier related display filings hit overlapping G80 and GV80 years, so a car fixed once under an older cluster campaign can still owe the newer software. Ask Genesis for the campaign printout with Hyundai or Genesis codes such as 033G next to the NHTSA number.

Look, a fuel smell is not a "needs a car wash" story on this SUV until the pipe and pump lines are closed on that exact VIN.

Warranty leftovers and Coupe trims

Genesis advertises long powertrain coverage on new cars, and some used GV80s may still carry leftover factory coverage if the in-service date and mileage fit. That is not a substitute for closed recalls. The GV80 Coupe is a two-row styling play with hotter power on the e-supercharged path; do not buy one expecting adult third-row seats. Cross-shop it against the squareback if you need occasional kid seats in the wayback.

AWD, history and title checks

Most used GV80s you will see are all-wheel drive. That helps in snow but does not protect you from a washed title or a rolled-back odometer. Read ownership and accident lines carefully, and ask for a lift inspection focused on oil leaks around the fuel rail area after a cold soak. CARFAX says its reports cover title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Honestly, a seller screenshot of a closed Hyundai campaign on a different VIN is not helping you. Genesis shares some recall paperwork with Hyundai Motor America, but your GV80 still has to close on its own. If you are comparing mid-size luxury crossovers, also weigh the kids-only third row against a true three-row rival before you pay for seats you will never use.
