IQ Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public rates page, so checking history is still your job. When I read iqcu.com/rates on Nov. 5, 2026, Vehicle Loan Rates showed Auto Loans effective as of October 15, 2026, with 2022-newer cars from 5.34% to 20.44% APR for terms up to 60 months, and higher ranges for older model-year bands. The footnotes say actual rates depend on credit, term, vehicle age and mileage, and employment history.
What IQ's rate page says
As of Nov. 5, 2026 the auto table broke rates out by age band:
- 2022 and newer: 5.34%-20.44% APR up to 60 months; 5.74%-20.84% up to 72 months; 6.39%-21.94% up to 84 months, with sample payments per $1,000 borrowed listed beside each band.
- 2018-2021: 5.69%-20.74% up to 60 months; 6.44%-21.14% up to 72 months; 6.94%-22.24% up to 84 months.
- 2017 and older: 7.79%-22.09% up to 48 months; 8.14%-22.49% up to 72 months.
- Rates effective as of October 15, 2026; APR depends on member credit qualifications, term, age and mileage of the vehicle, credit and employment history.
I did not find language making a CARFAX mandatory to close a loan. Ask your loan officer what they need for your VIN, because older cars already sit in higher published bands.
Why you should still pull a report
IQ's age bands show that older cars cost more to finance even before a brand appears. A salvage or rebuilt title can change approval entirely. Run the VIN at NHTSA for recalls, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches, and CARFAX for private party sales covers private purchases.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
- Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or stop the loan?
- Which model-year band does this VIN fall into for your rate sheet?
- What mileage limits apply inside that band?
How to use the bands without getting trapped
A 2017 car already starts at a higher published floor than a 2022 car on IQ's sheet. Ask for your actual APR in writing for the term you want. Look, we have seen buyers shop only the newest band's low number, then bring a high-mile older car and act surprised at the quote. Match the car to the band before you fall in love.
Title brands and IQ Credit Union
The public page does not publish a full brand matrix. Ask directly, and read financing a rebuilt title car. Confirm how your state handles the title before funds move; our Washington private sale title transfer guide is a starting point if you are buying in that state.
What a lender check does not cover
Collateral checks are not inspections. Run NHTSA, compare odometers and pay a shop. Our pre-purchase inspection cost guide covers typical fees. If the seller blocks those steps, walk.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
Honestly, a few dollars on a report is cheap next to a longer term on the wrong older car. Keep the PDF with your loan packet.
So print the Oct. 15, 2026 rate band that matches your model year and bring it to the conversation. If the car is a 2017 or older, expect the higher floors on the sheet and budget the payment with that in mind before you negotiate the purchase price. Confirm report contents and total at checkout when you buy your own history file.
Also ask whether IQ will finance a private-party car in the older band at the same LTV as a dealer deal. Some credit unions tighten LTV on older private-party cars even when the APR band looks open, and that detail belongs in writing next to the rate.
Keep a screenshot of the Oct. 15, 2026 age-band table with your application. When a car sits on the line between model-year bands, that screenshot prevents a surprise move into a more expensive row at the last minute.
If IQ asks for proof of insurance before funding, send the binder with the same VIN that appears on your history report and the purchase contract. Mismatched VINs slow private-party closings more often than rate debates do.
