Does Harborstone Credit Union Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Harborstone Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public rates page, so the history check stays with you. When I read harborstone.com/rates on Nov. 5, 2026, the Vehicle Loans table showed Auto Loan (new and used) as low as 6.39% APR, with rates effective as of November 1, 2026. The page says your personalized rate depends on credit qualifications plus loan amount and term, and that term is set by collateral year and loan amount.

What Harborstone's rate page says

As of Nov. 5, 2026 the vehicle section listed:

  • Auto Loan (new and used): as low as 6.39% APR, effective November 1, 2026.
  • Boat loans as low as 7.09%, motorcycle loans as low as 7.14%, and RV / other secured loans as low as 7.59% APR on the same effective date.
  • A note that term is determined by collateral year and loan amount for all vehicle types.
  • A note that your personalized rate is based on credit qualifications and the loan amount and term.
  • Interest rates subject to change without notice.

I did not find language saying a CARFAX is mandatory to close an auto loan. Ask your loan officer what documents they need for your VIN, because underwriting details are not all on the rates page.

Why you should still pull a report

Harborstone prices the loan assuming the car matches what you described. A salvage brand, flood history or odometer problem found later is still your problem. Run the VIN at NHTSA for recalls, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches, and CARFAX for private party sales covers private deals common at credit unions.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or stop the loan?
  • What maximum term applies to a car of this model year?
  • For a private-party purchase, how do you handle title and lien timing?

How to use the as-low-as number

As-low-as 6.39% is the best published auto figure, not a promise for every credit file. Ask for your actual APR in writing before you shop. Look, we have seen buyers treat the headline rate as locked, then learn the car's age forced a shorter term and a higher payment. Get both rate and term on paper first.

Title brands and Harborstone

The public page does not publish a brand-by-brand lending matrix. Ask directly, and read financing a rebuilt title car. Harborstone is a Washington credit union, so confirm title transfer rules before funds move; our Washington private sale title transfer guide covers the state process.

What a lender check does not cover

Collateral review is not a mechanical inspection. Run NHTSA, compare odometers and pay a shop. Our pre-purchase inspection cost guide covers typical fees. If the seller blocks those steps, walk.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.

Honestly, a few dollars on a report is cheap next to a multi-year loan on the wrong car. Keep the PDF with your loan packet.

So treat the Nov. 1, 2026 effective date as a snapshot, not a forever rate. If your closing slips by a few weeks, ask whether the as-low-as figure still applies or whether a newer sheet is in force. Confirm report contents and total at checkout when you buy your own history file, and keep that PDF beside the loan estimate.

If you are buying from a private seller in another county, schedule the inspection and the title appointment before you wire a deposit. Harborstone still needs a clear path to a first lien, and a delayed title is a delayed funding date.

Keep a screenshot of the Nov. 1, 2026 vehicle rate table with your application packet. If the as-low-as auto figure moves before funding, you will want proof of the sheet you were shown when you started.

If Harborstone asks for proof of insurance before funding, send the binder with the same VIN that appears on your history report and the purchase contract. Mismatched VINs are a common closing delay on private-party deals.
