Does Trailhead Credit Union Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Trailhead Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public rates page, so checking the car's history is your job. When I read trailheadcu.org/rates on Nov. 5, 2026, the Vehicle Loans section showed Autos (New and Used) from 4.99% to 18.00% APR for terms up to 84 months, with rates current as of September 25, 2026. The same table lists loan-to-value adjustments, a mileage surcharge above 125,000 miles, a green-auto discount and a floor rate note.

What Trailhead's rate page says

As of Nov. 5, 2026 the auto table carried more detail than most credit-union pages:

  • Autos (New and Used): 4.99% to 18.00% APR, terms up to 84 months, rates current as of 9/25/2026.
  • Loan amount bands by term: up to 60 months for about $5,000-$9,999.99; 61-72 months for about $10,000-$14,999.99; 73-84 months for $15,000 and up.
  • LTV adjustments: below 80% LTV minus 0.5%; 81%-100% base; above 100% plus 0.5%.
  • Other adjustments: no automatic payment plus 0.25%; mileage above 125,000 plus 1%; green auto minus 0.25%, with a separate note about a 0.50% APR discount on hybrid and electric vehicles and an offer valid through December 31, 2026.
  • Floor rate listed at 2.49%; value based on sales price or KBhttps://www.cheapcarfaxautocheck.com/blog/MSRP for new, whichever is less.

I did not find language making a CARFAX mandatory to close a loan. Rules can change and not all underwriting is public, so ask your loan officer what they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Trailhead's mileage and LTV add-ons already show how the car's condition changes your rate. A branded title or odometer problem can change approval itself. Run the VIN at NHTSA for recalls, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches, and CARFAX for private party sales covers private deals.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or stop the loan?
  • How is mileage above 125,000 documented for the plus-1% adjustment?
  • Does the green-auto discount through December 31, 2026 apply to this VIN?

How to use the ranges without getting trapped

The 4.99% floor of the published range is not what every member pays after LTV, mileage and autopay adjustments. Ask for your actual APR in writing. Look, we have seen buyers celebrate a "five percent" headline and then learn a high-mile private-party car stacked every surcharge on the page. Pull the report before the deposit.

Title brands and Trailhead

The public rates page does not spell out how Trailhead treats salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon titles. Silence is not approval. Ask the underwriter directly, and read financing a rebuilt title car. Trailhead serves the Portland, Oregon area, so check title transfer rules before money moves; our Oregon private sale title transfer guide covers that state.

What a lender check does not cover

A lender title search protects collateral, not your wallet after a missed recall or a hidden flood. Run NHTSA, compare odometer readings and pay for an inspection. Our pre-purchase inspection cost guide covers typical shop fees. If the seller resists those steps, treat that as an answer.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.

Honestly, a few dollars on a report is cheap next to 84 months of payments on the wrong car. Keep the PDF with your loan packet.

So compare Trailhead's written APR against at least one other credit union or bank quote on the same VIN and term. The green-auto discount through December 31, 2026 only helps if the vehicle actually qualifies, so bring the window sticker or build sheet when you ask. Confirm report contents and total at checkout when you buy your own history file.

Keep screenshots of the Sept. 25, 2026 rate table with your application. If Trailhead updates the sheet before funding, you want proof of what you were quoted on the day you applied.
