McLaren VIN Decoder: SBM 570S, 720S and GT Codes

A U.S.-market McLaren VIN starts with SBM, the WMI for McLaren Automotive Limited in Woking, England. In our October 14, 2026 vPIC runs, 570S patterns starting SBM13DAA decoded to Woking, Surrey, with a 3.8-liter V8 and a dual-clutch box, 720S patterns starting SBM14DCA came back as Woking 4.0-liter V8 coupes, a GT pattern SBM22GCA listed a Woking 4.0-liter coupe, and a 650S Spider pattern SBM11FAA decoded to a Woking convertible with a 3.8-liter eight. Position 10 is the year and position 11 is the plant (W for Woking). These are low-volume UK builds, so fuel tank, brake banjo and hood latch campaigns matter as much as the carbon tub story.

We built those samples from real complaint prefixes and ran them through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder. If you need the basics first, read how to decode a VIN. For another low-volume European sports-car neighbor, use our Porsche VIN decoder.

570S, 720S and GT patterns

570S is the Sports Series coupe. Our 2019 pattern SBM13DAA decoded to Woking with a 3.8-liter V8 and a dual-clutch transmission. 720S is the Super Series car. 2018 and 2019 patterns SBM14DCA both came back as Woking 4.0-liter V8 coupes with dual-clutch boxes. GT is the grand tourer. A 2020 pattern SBM22GCA decoded to Woking with a 4.0-liter eight and three doors listed on the body class. A 2015 650S Spider pattern SBM11FAA came back as a Woking convertible under series Spider S with the 3.8-liter engine. So if a listing says "720S" and the VDS block does not look like 14DC in our sample set, ask for the door sticker and decode it yourself.

Year and plant codes

Position 9 is the check digit under 49 CFR 565.15. Year codes in our samples included F for 2015, J for 2018, K for 2019 and L for 2020. Plant code W pointed to Woking, Surrey. Honestly, a cloned VIN can still pass the check digit, so matching the dash plate to the door sticker by hand is not optional on a McLaren.

Recalls to clear by VIN

Fuel tank NVH bracket work shows up under 20V-231 on 2016-2020 720S, 2020 GT and related cars. Brake banjo bolt misassembly is covered by 21V-561 on certain 2019-2020 570S, 720S, 600LT and GT cars. GT-specific campaigns include 22V-103 for driver air bag and restraint controller pairing on 2019-2021 cars, and 24V-661 for hood latch release cable tension on 2020-2023 GTs. Run the VIN with our NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough, and do not assume every independent exotic shop stocks Woking-era banjo bolts.

Title and miles on a low-volume McLaren

A recall screen will not show a flood title, an odometer rollback or a prior track day. We've seen seller PDFs with no VIN on the page treated like a history report, and that is a trap when the asking price already has six digits. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.

Low-volume UK builds and parts reality

McLaren U.S. volume is tiny next to Porsche or even Aston. That means a closed recall printout from a factory-authorized shop is worth more than a verbal "all campaigns done." Look, if a seller wants you to skip the VIN screen because the car "just left a collection," that is exactly when we pull the NHTSA check anyway. Parts lead times for banjo bolts and latch cables can stretch, so an open campaign is a negotiation point, not a footnote.

What a decode will not show

vPIC will not tell you if the carbon tub was repaired, if the miles jumped, or if a prior owner tracked it hard. Clear open campaigns first, then pull a real report before you wire a deposit.

Also compare the build sheet claims to the decode. We've seen listings that call a GT a 720S because the seller liked the sound of the badge more than the VDS block. If position patterns disagree with the ad headline, walk until the paperwork matches.
