Toll violations after buying a used car usually happen because the plate or an old transponder is still tied to someone else, or because the title transfer has not reached the state yet, so the fix is to remove the old tag, register your own account and finish the transfer fast. The Texas DMV says vehicles must be titled in the buyer's name within 30 days and that an untransferred car can leave the seller responsible for toll violations.

How tolls get billed

Many toll roads bill by transponder first and by license plate photo second. If the seller's transponder is still on the windshield, your trips may post to their account; if the plate is still registered to them, mailed bills may go to them and then back to you. The E-ZPass Group says its member agencies stretch across 20 states, so an East Coast tag can still read far from home.

At the sale

  • Ask the seller to remove any transponder and confirm it is closed or moved.
  • Write the date, time and odometer reading on the bill of sale.
  • Ask whether any toll notices are pending on the plate.
  • Finish the title transfer promptly; our Texas transfer guide and California transfer guide cover two common states.

Temporary tags and plates

Dealer temporary tags can make toll billing messy if the tag number is not tied to your account. The Texas DMV says that, effective July 1, 2025, temporary tags will be replaced with metal license plates under House Bill 718. Our paper tag guide covers the risks of tags that do not match the car.

If a bill arrives anyway

Compare the date of the toll with the sale date on your bill of sale. If it predates your purchase, send the agency a copy of the bill of sale and ask that it be moved to the prior owner. California says its seller release, the NRL, shifts liability for violations after the sale date to the next owner, which is why sellers file it.

Watch for toll text scams

The E-ZPass Group warns of a large increase in fraudulent texts and emails claiming money is owed and tells people to go directly to the toll facility site instead. A new owner waiting on a real bill is an easy target, so never pay from a texted link.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Is there a transponder in the car, and is the account closed?
  • Have any toll notices arrived since you listed the car?
  • Will you file your state release or transfer notice today?
  • Can you give me a signed bill of sale with the time of sale?

When to walk away

Walk away from a seller who will not give a dated bill of sale, who wants you to keep driving on their plate for a few weeks, or whose plate shows a pile of unpaid notices they refuse to explain. Unpaid notices can follow a plate for months, and you do not want to inherit the argument.

Before money changes hands

Run the VIN at the NHTSA recall lookup, pull a history report and confirm any old loan is paid off; our lien release guide covers that step. On anything out of warranty, a pre-purchase inspection costs far less than a surprise repair. Pay by a traceable method and get a dated receipt with the VIN on it.

Reading the history report

Read the title section first: any salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon brand changes the value more than anything else. Then line up the odometer readings by date and look for gaps or drops, and check the states where the car was registered. An approved NMVTIS check adds insurer and salvage-yard records. Our odometer discrepancy guide explains odd mileage entries.

Paperwork to keep

Keep the bill of sale, the signed title or a copy of it, the odometer statement, any Buyers Guide and every payoff or lien letter in one folder. Photograph the dash mileage and the VIN plate on the day the car changes hands. If a dispute comes up later, dated paperwork is what a DMV, an insurer or a court will ask for first.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
