SAFE Credit Union advertises auto loans with terms that can stretch toward 84 or 90 months, relationship discounts, and financing up to 125% of the purchase price on qualifying deals. Its shopping tools list CARFAX among research links inside AutoSmart. That is not the same as a published rule that every private-party car must arrive with a paid report, so members should still clear the VIN before they sign.
What SAFE's auto pages say
Details below come from SAFE Credit Union auto loan content reviewed Nov. 5, 2026. Confirm with SAFE before you apply.
- Marketing highlighted new, used and refinance auto options, plus a refinance discount of 0.50% off the current rate for members bringing a loan from elsewhere (promotion terms apply).
- Footnotes tied to the pages said the lowest available APR for a promotion was 4.69%, accurate as of 09/01/2026, with rates and terms subject to change.
- A payment example cited a $25,000 loan at 7.29% APR for 90 months ($361.42) for new-car financing, with up to 125% financing noted.
- AutoSmart was described as a dealer shopping path after pre-approval, with research links that included Kelley Blue Book and CARFAX.
- Optional products listed included GAP, Mechanical Breakdown Insurance and SAFE Payment Protection.
High LTV sounds helpful when taxes and fees stack on top of price. It also means you can owe more than the car is worth on day one. Read our loan-to-value explainer before you stretch the loan to clear a soft credit approval.
CARFAX in the shopping flow vs your own report
When SAFE points members to CARFAX inside AutoSmart, that helps on dealer inventory tied to the tool. It does not automatically audit a Facebook Marketplace sedan or a curb-side SUV. Pull your own report from the windshield VIN and cross-check brands with NMVTIS. Our credit union salvage title loan guide covers why rebuilt stickers stall funding even when the APR math looked fine.
If a dealer emails a report PDF, verify the report ID and VIN rather than trusting the attachment. Fake report tells show up most on rushed private sales, but they appear in dealer inboxes too.
Questions to ask SAFE before you fall for a car
- Will SAFE fund salvage, rebuilt, lemon or flood brands on used cars?
- How does vehicle age and mileage affect the maximum term?
- Is the 125% figure available on used cars, or only on certain new deals?
- Does an open safety recall block funding until it is closed?
- Are GAP and MBI optional, and can they be declined without changing the APR?
Get the answers in writing or in the loan estimate notes. Marketing pages change; your closing documents are what bind the deal.
Inspection and recall checks still matter
A long term on a high-LTV used car is painful if the transmission fails in month six. Budget a pre-purchase inspection and a free NHTSA recall check. Our GAP insurance guide explains when optional GAP helps on a 125% loan and when you are better paying more down instead.
Also watch dealer add-ons that inflate the amount financed. SAFE's own pages note that final APR depends on the exact car and credit factors. That is your cue to compare the out-the-door number, more than the payment.
When to walk
Walk if SAFE will not fund the title brand on the car you want, if the seller will not allow an inspection, or if the AutoSmart price and the desk price diverge without a clear reason. A credit union pre-approval is power. Use it to leave bad paperwork behind.
Bring the windshield VIN to your loan officer before you transfer a deposit. A five-minute check beats a week of untangling a deal that cannot fund. If the seller refuses to wait for that check, you learned something useful about the seller.
Keep copies of the history report, the NHTSA recall printout, the bill of sale and any lender pre-approval email in one folder. When a desk manager paraphrases your rate, you will have the real numbers in front of you. Honestly, most funding delays come from paperwork gaps, not from mystery underwriting.
If you are comparing two credit unions, ask each the same branded-title and open-recall questions on the same day. Write the answers down. Marketing APRs move; collateral rules decide if your chosen car can close.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
