Before you buy a 2005-2011 Dakota, clear the air bag inflator and rear axle pinion nut recalls, then test the transmission cold.

Used Dodge Dakota Buying Guide: 2005-2011 Trucks and Recalls

The used Dodge Dakota most people should buy is a 2008-2011 third-gen truck with the 302-hp 4.7 V8 or the 3.7 V6, and only after the VIN shows the air bag inflator recalls closed and, on 2009-2011 trucks, the rear axle pinion nut recall done. Those are not paperwork recalls. The driver inflator campaign came with a do-not-drive warning, and a loose pinion nut can lock the rear axle. Get those answered first, then worry about trim.

Dodge sold the Dakota through 2011, and IIHS confirms it was discontinued after that model year, so even the newest one is 15 years old. That puts most of them in private-sale territory, where nobody's checking recall status for you. On Monday, October 19, 2026, I pulled NHTSA's recall data for 2005-2011, plus Consumer Guide's 2005-11 Dakota review and the IIHS crash file.

What changed in 2005

Consumer Guide says the 2005 redesign kept the old wheelbase but grew four inches longer and up to 600 pounds heavier, close to full-size. Regular cabs were gone. You get a Club Cab with a 6.5-foot bed and rear-hinged back doors that only open after the fronts, or a Quad Cab with four real doors and a 5.3-foot bed. Engines at launch were a 210-hp 3.7 V6 and a 4.7 V8 in 230-hp or 260-hp High Output tune, with a six-speed manual, a four-speed automatic (V6) or a five-speed automatic (V8). Both 4WD and full-time AWD were offered, each with low range. Rear-wheel ABS was standard and four-wheel ABS was optional, which matters for one recall below.

  • 2006: TRX and TRX4 packages, wider-opening rear doors at midyear.
  • 2008: freshened styling and a 302-hp 4.7 V8 that replaced both earlier V8s, automatic only.
  • 2009: AWD and the manual were dropped.
  • 2010-2011: a slightly revised suspension, then the end of the line.

Our Dodge VIN decoder post shows how to confirm the engine and drive type before you trust a listing that says "V8 4x4."

Trouble spots and what to test

Consumer Guide's list leans toward the transmission. On 2005-06 trucks, a split filter in the cooler return line could cause delayed engagement after sitting overnight, and a leaking solenoid and pressure switch could throw a check-engine light. A 2007 with a rumble-strip vibration at steady speed likely has a bad torque converter. Rear window seals on 2006-07 trucks can leak and soak the rear floor, so lift the rear seat. Filling the tank can be a fight on 2005-09 trucks until an improved vapor tube is fitted. Look, a Dakota that's been towing a camper for 15 years needs a test drive cold, with the trans fluid checked and a few slow reverses up a driveway.

Recalls you have to clear

15V313 covers 2005-2011 Dakotas and 2006-2009 Mitsubishi Raiders with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag whose inflator can take on moisture and rupture, throwing metal fragments. NHTSA's entry says owners should not drive the truck until the repair is done. Passenger-side inflators are covered by 16V352, with model years that depend on where the truck has been registered, and by 18V021 and 19V018 on later trucks. 14V770 hit 2005 trucks sold or registered in high-humidity states. Our Takata air bag recall check explains how to read those state zones.

For 2009-2011, 13V038 says an undersized pinion spline can let the rear axle pinion nut loosen, which can lock the axle with little warning. NHTSA's summary says a July 2015 consent order gave owners options that included a repurchase. 12V474 is a related 2009-2010 pinion nut recall. Earlier trucks have their own list: 05V460 (2005, 42RLE automatic park pawl plug), 05V002 (2005, curtain air bag fasteners), 17V820 (2005, heated seat burn holes), 06V038 (2006 with four-wheel ABS, early rear lockup), 06V039 (2006, static spark that can upset lights or wipers), 14V795 (2006-07 manuals, clutch ignition interlock springs) and 06V341 (2007, a software fault that could briefly lock the drive wheels). Crash ratings

IIHS rated the 2005-11 Dakota Acceptable in its original moderate overlap frontal test, using a 2005 Club Cab ST. Structure was Good, but the driver's left leg and foot measure was Poor. Head restraints were Acceptable on seats without adjustable lumbar and Poor on seats with it.

The older truck and the Mitsubishi twin

The 1997-2004 Dakota was a different truck, with a 3.9 V6 and 5.2 or 5.9 V8s early on, a 4.7 V8 from 2000 and the 3.7 V6 in 2004. Consumer Guide flags front ball joints on 1997-2003 trucks that wear early and can drag the lower control arm into the repair. The Mitsubishi Raider, sold 2006-2009, is a restyled Dakota with the same drivetrains and the same air bag recalls, so check it through our Mitsubishi recall check.

If the report shows an accident

A reported accident on a pickup means you look underneath: frame rails, bed mounts, tow hitch area and whether the air bags were replaced with real parts. Search the VIN on NMVTIS for title brands, and pull the report yourself rather than reading one the seller printed. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Stellantis. In mid October 2026, guest reports ran about $5.50, member reports about $4.50 and the bundle about $6.75, where retail is roughly $39.99 to $44.99. Your checkout total wins if it differs.
