Used Dodge Nitro Buying Guide: Best Years, Recalls to Clear and Liberty Links

The Dodge Nitro is a stretched Jeep Liberty with a Dodge body, sold for 2007-2011, and the version I'd shop is a 2009-2011 automatic. Those years got a revised suspension and brakes, and the six-speed manual, which Consumer Guide flags for popping out of gear, was gone by then. Whatever the year, ask the dealer to confirm recall 20V396. It covers every 2007-2011 Nitro, and the fix didn't start until February 2021, so plenty of cars may still be waiting.

I pulled all five Nitro model years from NHTSA's recall API on Sunday, October 18, 2026, and got 11 separate campaigns, seven of them on 2007 models. I also read Consumer Guide's 2007-11 Nitro review and Consumer Reports' Nitro page. Neither is kind to this truck, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

Engines, gearboxes and the 4WD question

Consumer Guide says Dodge built the Nitro by stretching a Liberty, making it 4 inches longer overall. SXT and SLT models got a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6, and the R/T got a 4.0-liter V6 that Consumer Guide lists at 255 hp and Consumer Reports at 260. The SXT came standard with the six-speed manual, the SLT with a four-speed automatic, and the R/T with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard. Manual Nitros could have part-time 4WD that shouldn't stay engaged on dry pavement, automatics could get all-wheel drive, and neither setup had low-range gearing. So if you need a real off-road box, this isn't it.

The years changed less than the names did. Trailer sway control arrived for 2008. For 2009 the suspension and brakes were revised and the manual was dropped. For 2010 the trims became Heat, Detonator and Shock, and 2011 was largely unchanged. Consumer Guide's blog says just under 155,000 Nitros were sold before production ended in 2012, and it notes EPA ratings as low as 15/20 mpg.

Recalls to clear by VIN

  • 20V396, 2007-2011: the brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel can be loose or missing, and the emblem or its nuts can become projectiles when the air bag fires. Dealers replace the air bag cover. The recall began February 11, 2021.
  • 13V121, 2007-2008 4x2 built March 21, 2006 to March 1, 2008: a transfer case heat shield can drop and rub through the driveshaft. If the shaft breaks, the air bags can deploy and you lose power. Dealers add a support bracket.
  • 13V282, 2011 built June 17 to December 15, 2011: a resistor in the restraint control module can fail so the active head restraints don't deploy in a rear impact.
  • 10V009 and 10V315, 2010: a missing or malformed brake booster input rod clip, and badly flared brake tubes that can leak fluid.
  • 2007 only: ABS software that could lock the rear brakes (06V493) or delay braking while coasting uphill (07V434), TIPM software that could stall the engine (07V291), and wipers that could quit after heavy use of the delay setting (09V438).

Run the VIN through the NHTSA recalls API and then ask a Dodge dealer for the campaign history. Our Dodge recall check by VIN post covers the dealer step, and the Dodge VIN decoder guide helps you confirm the engine and drivetrain before you trust the listing.

Problems that never became recalls

Consumer Guide lists rear door handles on 2007-2008 trucks that stop working inside or out as the latch goes out of adjustment, so try both rear doors from both sides. On 2007-2008 models, static discharge when you insert the key can damage the wireless control module and leave you with a no-crank, no-start truck. Manuals from 2007 to 2010 can pop out of gear, which means a new first gear and synchronizers once the shifter boot is ruled out. Some 2007s had loose or wandering steering at highway speed that took loosening and retightening suspension parts. Consumer Reports adds that the ride is stiff, the cabin noisy and the footwells extremely narrow, so sit in it for ten minutes before you decide you can live with it.

Nitro vs Liberty and Journey

Several of the campaigns above, including 13V121, 13V282, 10V009 and 10V315, also hit the Liberty, which tells you how much hardware the two share. Our used Jeep Liberty guide covers the KK twin and its own trouble spots. If you want a Dodge with a third row and a softer ride, the used Dodge Journey guide covers a different, car-based design.

History, title and what a report costs

Old SUVs get dragged through floods and fields, and a dealer's free printout can be a year old. Check NMVTIS for salvage and flood brands, and look under the carpet for silt. We resell CARFAX and AutoCheck reports under license and aren't connected to CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Stellantis. As of mid October 2026, single reports run about $5.50 for guests and about $4.50 for members, a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is close to $6.75, and buying direct costs about $39.99 to $44.99. Confirm what you're charged on the checkout page.
