Used GMC Acadia Buying Guide: 3 Generations and Recalls

A used GMC Acadia comes in three generations: the big 2007-2016 trucks, the smaller 2017-2023 redesign, and the 2024-and-newer truck that grew again. For most families the sweet spot is a 2020-2023 Acadia with the 3.6 V6 and nine-speed automatic, or a 2024 if the budget stretches. On a 2014-2017 truck, the first thing to check by VIN is driver air bag recall 23V-334, which covers nearly a million GM SUVs.

We pulled Acadia recall filings and review notes on October 14, 2026. Consumer Reports lists the generations as 2007-2016, 2017-2023 and 2024-present, and says the 2017 truck was shorter and 500 pounds lighter than the one it replaced. Our vPIC patterns put a 2010 and a 2024 Acadia at GM's Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan, and a 2017 SLT-1 and a 2020 Denali at Spring Hill, Tennessee. Decode yours with our GMC VIN decoder. The first-gen Acadia shares its recall file with the Buick Enclave and Chevy Traverse, so the used Buick Enclave buying guide and used Chevy Traverse buying guide are useful cross-checks.

Three generations, three different trucks

Size is the first thing to settle. CR says the first Acadia used a 275-hp 3.6 V6 with a six-speed automatic, returned about 16 mpg overall, and got an upgraded interior and a front center air bag for 2013. The 2017 truck shrank. CR found its 3.6 V6 smooth at 19 mpg in testing, with a weaker 2.5 four as the base engine, and Car and Driver says that generation shared a platform with the Cadillac XT5, Buick Envision and Chevy Blazer. For 2024 it grew again: CR and C&D both list a 328-hp turbo 2.5 four with an eight-speed automatic as the only engine, CR says it now lines up with the Traverse, and every 2024-and-newer truck can tow up to 5,000 pounds per C&D. If you need a body-on-frame truck that tows more, read the used GMC Yukon buying guide instead.

Which second-generation years

The 2020 freshening is the line we would draw. CR says it added a turbo engine and a nine-speed automatic in place of the six-speed, along with a new infotainment system and a push-button shifter, and the base four was dropped. CR also says forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert became standard for 2022. So a 2022-2023 V6 truck is the most complete version of that generation. CR did note that even its Denali test truck lacked some luxury features, so do not pay Denali money expecting Cadillac gear.

Recalls to clear by VIN

The first generation has the long list. 14V-118 covers 2008-2013 Acadias whose seat-mounted side air bag wiring can lose contact, so the side air bags and pretensioners may not deploy. 15V-415 covers 2007-2012 trucks with a power liftgate whose gas struts can wear and let the open gate fall. 14V-266 covers a front seat belt cable that can fatigue on 2009-2014 trucks. The big one is 23V-334, which covers 2014-2017 Acadias, Enclaves and Traverses, 995,085 vehicles in all, because the driver air bag inflator may explode. GM said it would keep mailing final owner letters through December 2025. On second-gen trucks, 17V-516 covers 2017-2018 Acadias whose right front intermediate driveshaft can fracture, and 22V-709 covers 2020-2021 trucks with Surround Vision whose rear camera cable may be crimped wrong. Use our GMC recall check by VIN post for the lookup.

Title, history and price

An exploding-inflator recall is the kind of thing a quick dealer sticker glosses over, so get the repair order with the VIN on it. A recall screen also says nothing about accidents, flood titles or odometer jumps, and CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. Read the ownership lines for rental or fleet use. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
