The best used Hyundai Veloster for most people is a 2019 to 2021 second-generation car, ideally a Turbo, and the Veloster N is the one to get if you want a real hot hatch. Whichever you look at, check engine recalls by VIN first. The 2015-2016, 2019-2021 and 2013 Turbo cars all have engine-related campaigns, and the 2012-2015 cars are part of a huge ABS fire recall. The U.S. Veloster ran 2012 to 2017, then 2019 to 2021, with the N alone carrying on through 2022.
I read every Veloster and Veloster N year in NHTSA's recall API on Saturday afternoon, October 17, 2026, plus Car and Driver's reviews of both generations and a Hyundai dealer guide filed with NHTSA. On a cheap sporty hatch, the history matters as much as the spec sheet. A clean-looking Turbo or N with aftermarket parts and no paperwork is a gamble.
First generation, 2012 to 2017
The original car had the odd door layout everyone remembers: one long door on the driver's side and two on the passenger side. Car and Driver's 2012 road test lists a 1.6-liter direct-injected four with 138 hp and 123 lb-ft, a six-speed manual or a new six-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds. EPA ratings were 28 city and 40 highway with the manual, 29 and 38 with the dual-clutch. C/D found it slow and not much fun, which is fair. A turbo version followed for 2013, and that one shows up in the recall list below.
Second generation, 2019 to 2022
The redesign is a much better car. C/D's 2021 page lists a 2.0-liter four with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, and a 1.6-liter turbo with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft in the Turbo trims, all front-drive, with a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic or seven-speed dual-clutch. Cargo space is 20 cubic feet, 45 with the rear seats folded. Hyundai dropped every version except the N after 2021, and The Drive listed the casualties as the 2.0, 2.0 Premium, R-Spec, Turbo and Ultimate.
The Veloster N uses a 2.0-liter turbo with 275 hp and 260 lb-ft. A six-speed manual is standard, an eight-speed dual-clutch became optional, and C/D clocked 5.1 seconds to 60. The early 2019 N made 250 hp unless it had the Performance package. C/D also complains about a firm, choppy ride and a drab cabin, and reported that the N would not return for 2023.
Veloster recalls to check by VIN
- 20V746, 2015-2016: connecting rod bearings can wear early, which can lead to engine damage, a stall or a fire. Dealers inspect the engine, replace it if they find bearing damage and install knock sensor detection software. See the NHTSA record.
- 21V301, 2019-2021 2.0 cars: piston oil rings may not have been heat-treated properly. Dealers inspect, replace the engine if needed and add piston ring noise sensing software. Letters went out August 24, 2021.
- 19V204, 2013 Turbo: engine software can cause pre-ignition that damages the engine. The fix is a software update.
- 23V651, 2012-2015: the ABS module can leak brake fluid internally and short, which can cause an engine-bay fire. The record covers 1,649,478 Hyundais and tells owners to park outside until the fuse is replaced.
- Veloster N: 24V528 (2019-2022, fuel pump failure, letters from September 9, 2024) and 22V746 (2021-2022, a transmission fail-safe mode problem that can cut drive power).
- Others: 19V311 (2019 driver door latch), 23V132 (2012-2014 rear parking sensors), and a handful of 2012-only campaigns for the manual parking brake, the panoramic sunroof glass and the 12-volt outlet.
The theft problem on key-start cars
Velosters with a turned key and no engine immobilizer are part of the Hyundai theft wave. A Hyundai dealer guide dated April 13, 2023 lists certain 2012-2017 and 2019-2021 Velosters as eligible for the free Campaign 993 anti-theft software, says push-button cars already have an immobilizer, and says immobilizers became standard on all Hyundais built from November 2021. Ask whether the software and window sticker were done, and look for a punched ignition or a replaced steering column cover. If the seller mentions a past theft, ask for the police report.
Veloster against its rivals
If you want the same Hyundai hardware with four normal doors, read our used Hyundai Elantra buying guide, since the 2019-2020 Elantra shares the 21V301 engine recall. For hot-hatch shoppers, our used Volkswagen GTI guide and used Honda Civic guide cover the cars the N was usually compared with.
How to check one
Decode the VIN with our Hyundai VIN decoder post or NHTSA's vPIC, run the recalls with our Hyundai recall check by VIN guide, and search NMVTIS for title brands. So pull your own history report too. A seller's PDF can be edited in a few minutes, and we have seen it done.
CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Hyundai. In mid October 2026, a report through us is about $5.50 for guests, $4.50 for members or about $6.75 for the bundle, while retail runs about $39.99 to $44.99. Confirm at checkout.
