Used Ford EcoSport Buying Guide: 2018-2022, the 1.0 vs 2.0 and Recalls

Ford sold the India-built EcoSport here from 2018 to 2022. Why the 2.0 AWD is the safer buy, what recall 23S64 means for 1.0 cars, and when to pick something else.

Used Ford EcoSport Buying Guide: 2018-2022, the 1.0 vs 2.0 and Recalls

If you are looking at a used Ford EcoSport, the 2.0-liter all-wheel-drive version is the one to buy, and the three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost cars need proof that Ford's oil pump belt recall has been done before you hand over any money. That recall covers 2018 to 2022 EcoSports and can end in engine failure. The EcoSport was sold here only from 2018 through 2022, and reviewers were never kind to it, so the price has to be low enough to make up for that.

I went through all five U.S. model years in NHTSA's recall API on Saturday, October 17, 2026, then read Car and Driver's first and last model-year pages and the Indian trade press on where these were built. Honestly, the recall picture is what separates a fair deal from a bad one here. The rest of the car is easy to judge on a test drive.

Two engines, two different cars

Car and Driver's 2018 page says the EcoSport was new to the U.S. that year with S, SE, SES and Titanium trims and two powertrains. The base engine was a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 123 hp and front-wheel drive. The option was a 2.0-liter four with 166 hp, and that was the engine that came with all-wheel drive. Both used a six-speed automatic. The base S got a 4.2-inch non-touch screen, so a cheap S will not have CarPlay. The rear hatch swings sideways rather than lifting, and some cars carry the spare on it, which matters if you park nose-out against a wall.

For 2022, Ford dropped the 1.0 and front drive entirely. C/D's 2022 page says every EcoSport that year had the 166-hp four and all-wheel drive, rated 23 mpg city and 29 highway, with a 2,000-pound tow rating that beats most small crossovers. It also calls the EcoSport dead last in its class, citing a tight back seat, vague steering, a noisy ride on spongy shocks and interior quality issues, and says Ford's own Maverick pickup was cheaper and more practical.

The reason the model ended is not mysterious. U.S. EcoSports came from India. Autocar India reported that the last EcoSport rolled off Ford's Chennai line on July 20, 2022, after Ford announced on September 9, 2021 that it would stop building cars in India, and that the made-in-India EcoSport was exported to markets including the United States.

The recall that decides the deal

The big one is 23V905, Ford recall 23S64. NHTSA says the oil pump drive belt or its tensioner can fail and cause a loss of oil pressure, which can stall the engine and cut power brake assist. It covers 139,730 vehicles across 2016 to 2018 Focus and 2018 to 2022 EcoSport models, and Ford's October 2024 dealer notice limits it to cars with the 1.0L EcoBoost and an automatic, built in Chennai between April 3, 2017 and December 24, 2021. Dealers replace the belt and tensioner. If the engine has already failed from this, Ford authorized an engine replacement as the interim fix, and the record says owner letters were mailed August 11, 2025.

So on a 1.0 car, I would want a dated dealer invoice for 23S64, not a verbal "it's been done." A three-cylinder that sounds fine on the lot can still be running the original belt. If the seller has no paperwork, run the VIN and ask a Ford dealer to look up the service history.

Other EcoSport recalls

  • 25V126, 2021-2022: the front axle half shafts can disconnect from the transmission, causing a loss of drive power, or a rollaway if the parking brake is not set. The record covers 18,648 vehicles, with letters mailed May 29, 2025.
  • 25V442, 2020-2021: a software error can leave the backup camera blank or stuck on screen. Dealers update the software, with letters mailed September 4, 2025.
  • Small campaigns: 19V023 (front seat frame welds, 63 of the 2019 cars), 20V791 (air bag modules missing booster propellant, 12 of the 2020 cars) and 18V312 (2018 cars for U.S. territories shipped with European brake cap labels and manuals).

EcoSport against the alternatives

If you can stretch, the used Ford Bronco Sport buying guide covers Ford's newer and pricier small SUV, and our used Ford Escape guide covers the roomier compact option. Outside Ford, the used Chevy Trax guide covers another budget pick. The EcoSport's case is the AWD 2.0 at a discount. If the asking price is close to those cars, skip it.

Checking one properly

Decode the VIN first, since the engine code tells you 1.0 or 2.0. Our Ford VIN decoder post explains it, and NHTSA's vPIC decoder does it for free. Then follow our Ford recall check by VIN guide and search NMVTIS for title brands. Do not trust a history report the seller sends you as a PDF. They are easy to fake, and on a car worth this little, a hidden flood or salvage brand eats the whole deal.
