Used Mazda CX-3 Buying Guide: 2016-2021 Years, Recalls and Checks

Mazda sold the CX-3 here from 2016 to 2021. Which years to shop, the rearview camera recall still rolling out by state, and when a CX-30 or HR-V makes more sense.

Used Mazda CX-3 Buying Guide: 2016-2021 Years, Recalls and Checks

A used Mazda CX-3 is a good small crossover if you mostly drive alone or with one passenger, and the 2019 to 2021 cars are the ones to shop because they got the refresh with standard blind-spot monitoring and an electronic parking brake. The U.S. run is short: 2016 through 2021, then Mazda dropped it. Before you pay, run the VIN for the rearview camera recall that covers every CX-3 model year, because NHTSA's record still shows owner letters going out in stages.

I pulled every CX-3 year from NHTSA's recall API on Saturday afternoon, October 17, 2026, and checked them against Car and Driver's model pages and Mazda's own announcement. This is a cheap car now, which is exactly why you see so many of them on small lots with thin paperwork. Cheap cars get less homework from sellers. Do yours anyway.

Which CX-3 years are which

Every U.S. CX-3 uses the same basic powertrain. Car and Driver's 2021 spec sheet lists a 2.0-liter four with 146 hp and 146 lb-ft, a six-speed automatic and front- or all-wheel drive, with EPA ratings of 29 city and 34 highway for front drive and 27 and 32 with AWD. There is no turbo and no manual to hunt for, so the real choices are drivetrain, trim and model year.

The 2019 model year is the line I would draw. C/D's 2019 page says that update brought a new grille, LED taillights, a redesigned center console with more storage, a rear armrest with cupholders, plusher seats and a height-adjustable passenger seat. More useful on a used car: an electronic parking brake with auto-hold became standard, and so did blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise, lane-departure warning and automatic high beams were still optional, so check the window sticker or a decode before you pay extra for a listing that claims them.

The 2020 and 2021 cars carry on with that setup. C/D notes the 2021 was unchanged from 2020, and it also notes an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Then on May 21, 2021, Mazda's newsroom said it would discontinue the CX-3 and Mazda6 for the 2022 model year in the U.S. If a U.S. listing says "2022 CX-3," the year is wrong, and a seller who gets the year wrong may have gotten other things wrong too.

Where it falls short

Space is the honest negative. C/D fit only three carry-on bags behind the back seat and 12 with it folded, while a Mazda 3 hatchback managed five and 15. The rear seat is tight, the ride is firm and the engine sounds coarse when you rev it. Reviewers liked it anyway because it steers and corners better than most small crossovers, but if you need a car for car seats and a stroller, look elsewhere.

The obvious elsewhere is the CX-30. MotorTrend's report on the discontinuation says the CX-30, which is based on the Mazda 3, is bigger, roomier and more powerful, and outsold the CX-3 about four to one in 2020. Our used Mazda CX-30 buying guide covers that car. For more room again, look at the used CX-5 guide, and if you are cross-shopping outside Mazda, our used Honda HR-V guide covers a rival with a much bigger cargo area.

CX-3 recalls to check by VIN

  • 23V487, 2016-2021: the rearview camera image can flicker or distort. The NHTSA record covers 236,100 Mazda3 and CX-3 vehicles. Dealers inspect and replace the camera as needed and add a sealing part on the camera wiring. Interim letters went out September 13, 2023, final letters for CT, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA and VA on August 14, 2024, and the record says the rest were expected on or before May 1, 2025. It had not been updated past that when I read it, so confirm the fix by VIN.
  • 21V875, 2019: the low-pressure fuel pump impeller can crack and deform, which can stall the engine. Dealers replace the pump. The record says owner letters were mailed July 18, 2022.
  • 2016 only: 16V203, where the lower nuts and bolts holding the front strut to the steering knuckle can loosen, and 16V644, which replaces both liftgate supports on certain early builds.

That is a short list for a car this age, which is good news. It is not the same as a clean bill of health. A recall list says nothing about a cracked windshield, a flood-damaged interior, or a hard life as a rental. Look at tire wear, ask whether the camera has been replaced already, and pull the AWD cars up on a lift if you can.

How to vet a CX-3 before you buy

Start with the VIN. Our Mazda VIN decoder post shows what each section means, and NHTSA's vPIC decoder will confirm the year and drivetrain for free. Then use our Mazda recall check by VIN walkthrough, and search NMVTIS for salvage, flood or junk brands. Look, a history report pulled by you beats one the seller forwards. We have seen screenshot "reports" with the mileage edited, and a cheap car bought on a fake report stops being cheap fast.
