Used Jaguar XE Buying Guide (2017-2020)

Shop a used Jaguar XE as a short-run U.S. compact luxury sedan sold only for 2017 through 2020. I'd spend my money on a 2018-2019 with the Ingenium turbo four that already has rear-camera wiring recall work done, or a V-6 S if you can stomach the fuel bill. Jaguar pulled the XE from North America after 2020, so every car left is used, and as of mid October 2026 campaign 25V017 still covers 2019-2020 rearview camera wiring damage.

The XE is the sedan sibling to the used Jaguar F-Pace crossover. If you're measuring it against German rivals, see our used BMW 3 Series buying guide and used Audi A4 buying guide. Parts, dealer density, and recall tooling differ even when the sticker prices look similar.

Years, engines, and what disappeared

Car and Driver's 2020 XE overview is the clean summary for the final U.S. year: styling and interior updates, standard Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, and two turbo fours (about 247 hp or 296 hp) after Jaguar dropped the supercharged V-6 and the diesel. C/D notes the car will not return to North America for 2021. Earlier years mixed a Ford-sourced turbo four, Ingenium fours, a diesel, and the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6; C/D's 2018 25t AWD test timed the Ingenium 247-hp four with AWD and logged 23 mpg overall. An eight-speed automatic was standard. For codes on a specific car, use our Jaguar VIN decoder.

C/D also flags a small back seat and a trunk that feels smaller than the brochure number suggests. We've seen shoppers fall for the exterior photos and then fail a child-seat fit check in the rear. Sit back there with the front seats set for tall drivers before you negotiate.

Recalls that still show up in 2026

I queried the NHTSA recalls API for XE years on Friday evening, October 16, including the 2019 XE query and the 2020 XE query. Prioritize:

  • 25V017, 2019-2020: trunk wiring damage can blank the rearview camera image. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the wiring. Owner letters were mailed February 2, 2026.
  • 23V501, 2019: earlier rearview-camera wiring campaign tied to FMVSS 111 rear visibility. Confirm both camera campaigns are closed if the car is a 2019.
  • 21V248, 2017-2018 and 2020: applies to cars that received a replacement rear rail assembly in service. Missing spot welds can weaken that rail. Dealers replace the assembly.
  • 17V286, 2017 diesel: fuel return hose may leak. Dealers replace the hose. Skip diesels without a completed campaign and clean service file.
  • 18V090, 2018: fuel-rail concern shared with other Jaguar models. Dealers repair under the campaign.

Our Jaguar recall check by VIN walkthrough covers how to re-check open work. A history report alone does not prove camera wiring labor was finished.

Crash tests and ownership friction

Car and Driver states that neither IIHS nor NHTSA published crash-test ratings for the XE, so you cannot lean on a five-star badge the way you might with a 3 Series. That is annoying when you're comparing insurance quotes. Warranty when new was five years / 60,000 miles with complimentary scheduled maintenance for the same window, which helps on lower-mile late cars but does nothing for an out-of-coverage 2017 with 90,000 miles. Budget for Jaguar specialist labor rates, and test every touchscreen menu -- C/D has called out lag and bugs in InControl Touch Pro across Jaguar products.

History, title, and what you pay for the report

Luxury lease returns and CPO leftovers dominate the XE pool. Scan for salvage, flood, and odometer flags on NMVTIS, then read a full report covering accidents and service. The CARFAX vehicle history report page lists the categories worth checking. Skip seller PDFs that arrive at midnight -- we've seen cropped accident pages. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and is not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian, or Jaguar Land Rover. As of October 2026 our guest price is about $5.50 per single report, members about $4.50, and the two-brand bundle near $6.75, against roughly $39.99-$44.99 bought direct. Match the checkout total, not a blog memory.
