Used Land Rover Discovery Sport Buying Guide (2015-2025)

A used Land Rover Discovery Sport makes sense if you want a small luxury SUV that can actually handle a muddy trailhead and you can accept slow acceleration and thirsty fuel economy. For most shoppers in October 2026, I'd look at 2020 and later models built on the newer platform, but only after confirming the VIN against two DC-DC converter recalls that still had no final fix as of this week.

It sits below the boxier, pricier Defender in Land Rover's lineup, and our used Land Rover Defender buying guide covers that truck if your budget stretches. If you are mostly driving on pavement, compare it honestly with the used Volvo XC60 and the related used Jaguar F-Pace, which shares a corporate parent and some of the same recall campaigns.

Years and engines: 2015-2019 vs 2020 and later

The Discovery Sport went on sale here for the 2015 model year. Car and Driver's February 2020 test says early cars used a Ford-sourced turbo 2.0-liter before Land Rover swapped in its own Ingenium 2.0-liter turbo four. Then came the big 2020 update. The May 2019 Land Rover press release describes a new Premium Transverse Architecture with a body 13 percent stiffer, a 246-hp P250 engine, and a 286-hp P290 mild hybrid on the R-Dynamic HSE. A small third row was optional.

Do not expect the newer car to feel quicker. C/D's 2020 P250 weighed 4,658 pounds and took 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph, which was 0.4 second slower than the older model they had tested. It returned 19 mpg overall and 21 mpg on their 75-mph highway loop. C/D also called the cabin dated and the touchscreen slow back then. So drive it on the highway, merge it hard once, and ask yourself if you can live with that before you fall for the styling.

What the current C/D review still says

Car and Driver's current Discovery Sport page rates it 6 out of 10. It lists towing up to 4,409 pounds, wading depth of 23.6 inches, and 28 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row. The warranty when new was four years or 50,000 miles with no free scheduled maintenance, so any 2021 or older car is outside basic coverage now. C/D also reports Land Rover has said production ends after the 2026 model year. That will not change parts supply overnight, but ask a local independent shop whether they work on these before you commit.

Recalls, including two without a final remedy

I queried the NHTSA recalls API on the evening of October 16, 2026, including the 2020 Discovery Sport query and the 2023 query. The ones I would raise with any seller:

  • 26V599, 2020-2024: the DC-DC converter can fail during high power demand or after a software error at start-up. That kills 12-volt charging and can lead to a complete loss of drive power and exterior lighting. Dealers will update software, but interim owner letters are not expected until November 13, 2026, and the final remedy was not available yet. This campaign expands 26V248.
  • 26V248, 2020 mild-hybrid models: the earlier version of the same converter overload problem. Interim letters went out June 17, 2026, with more letters promised once a final remedy exists.
  • 20V683, 2020 mild-hybrid models: a 48-volt overload could short the converter and raise the fire risk. Owners were told to park outside until the software update was done. Ask for proof it was.
  • 16V614, early 2015 builds: a transmission sensor fault could shift the SUV into neutral. Dealers inspect and update software.
  • 18V087, 2018: fuel rail end caps on the 2.0-liter gas engine may leak. Dealers replace the rail.
  • 24V163 and 24V678, 2024: a right lower A-pillar bolt that may not be tightened, and a camera module that can overheat and drop the rearview image.

Our Land Rover recall check by VIN post shows how to see open campaigns for one vehicle, and the Land Rover VIN decoder helps confirm if the car in front of you is a P250 or a P290 mild hybrid. That matters a lot this month, because the converter recalls hit the electrified cars hardest.

Inspection and paperwork

Pay a Land Rover-savvy shop for a pre-purchase inspection and ask them to scan for stored electrical faults, not just look underneath. A dead battery history, repeated battery replacements, or a tow-in on the service record would make me walk on a mild hybrid right now. Check every camera view and the touchscreen at start-up too. Then check title brands for free on NMVTIS and read a full report; the CARFAX history report page explains what gets recorded. Sellers sometimes text a report screenshot that cuts off the second page, and we've seen that more than once.

CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian, or Jaguar Land Rover. In mid October 2026 one report from us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and both brands together are near $6.75, compared with roughly $39.99-$44.99 direct. Confirm at checkout before you count on those numbers.
