Used Mercedes GLA Buying Guide (2015-2025)

If you want a used Mercedes-Benz GLA, the safest money in October 2026 goes to a 2021 or newer GLA250 with its records and recall work in hand, and the cheapest money goes to a 2015-2020 first-generation car that you inspect hard for roof-panel repairs and transmission behavior. Either way, run the VIN for open recalls before you talk price, because a driver-door-lock rollaway campaign covering recent GLAs is still rolling out in phases.

The GLA is the small one. If you are cross-shopping its bigger sibling, our used Mercedes GLC buying guide covers the roomier compact SUV, and the GLA's rivals have their own write-ups in our used BMW X1 buying guide and used Volvo XC40 buying guide.

Two generations, two different cars

The first-generation GLA arrived for the 2015 model year on the same front-drive platform as the CLA sedan. Car and Driver's 2015 GLA250 4Matic test lists a 208-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four with 258 lb-ft and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and the car hit 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. That same test noted moderate brake fade after four or five hard stops. MotorTrend's first test covered the GLA45 AMG too, a 355-hp version of the 2.0-liter, and said the front-drive GLA250 would follow the 4Matic cars to dealers in early 2015.

The second generation started with the 2021 model year. Car and Driver's current GLA page lists a 221-hp turbo four, an eight-speed dual-clutch, and front- or all-wheel drive, with a 48-volt hybrid assist added as of the 2024 model year. C/D tested a 2021 GLA250 4Matic at 6.3 seconds to 60, so the newer car is not meaningfully quicker. It is taller and roomier, though, and C/D says the back seat has more legroom than the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40. The AMG GLA35 makes 302 hp if you want the fast one and can live with a firmer, pricier car.

Equipment that people assume is there

Mercedes charged extra for a lot on the GLA, and the used listings rarely say which boxes were ticked. C/D calls out adaptive cruise control, proximity keyless entry, and heated front seats as options, along with lane-keeping assist. So a cheap GLA with no packages might be missing things a mainstream Honda includes. Pull the window sticker by VIN if the dealer has it, or decode the build with our Mercedes VIN decoder walkthrough and then verify in the car. Do not pay a "loaded" price on a photo of a steering wheel.

Cargo space is modest. C/D measured 15 cubic feet behind the rear seat on its 2021 test car, and that is a small number for something marketed as an SUV. Bring your stroller or golf bag to the test drive. Honestly, that test saves more regret than any spec sheet.

Recalls I would check on any GLA

I ran the NHTSA recalls API on Friday evening, October 16, 2026. One quirk first: the API files the GLA under trim names like GLA250, GLA 250, AMG GLA45, and AMG GLA 35, so a search for "GLA-Class" can come back empty and fool you. The 2022 GLA 250 query is a good example. The campaigns worth asking about:

  • 26V481, 2021-2025 GLA in the API: the driver door lock micro-switch can corrode and fail to detect an open door, so the electronic parking brake or Auto-Park may not engage, which can lead to a rollaway. Dealers will replace the driver door lock. Mercedes said owner letters would go out September 18, 2026, and the remedy is being released in phases by model and year, so a "parts not available" answer is possible right now.
  • 21V197 and 23V854, 2015-2020: the front roof panel between the windshield and the panoramic roof may not have been bonded correctly during a prior repair and can detach. Dealers replace the panel. A history report showing glass or roof work makes this one more urgent.
  • 21V033, 2019 GLA 250: power to the transmission control unit can drop and shift the car into neutral. Dealers replace the unit.
  • 20V672, 2019 GLA250: a loose engine-bay fusebox can disrupt engine, power steering, and stability control functions.
  • 18V912, 2018-2019: panoramic sunroof bonding that can leak water into the cabin.

Our Mercedes-Benz recall check by VIN guide shows how to confirm completed work. A clean history report does not mean the recall labor was done.

Ownership costs and the warranty gap

C/D lists the factory warranty at four years or 50,000 miles with no complimentary scheduled maintenance. So a 2021 that sold new in late 2020 is out of basic coverage by now, and most first-gen cars are long past it. Budget for Mercedes-dealer service pricing or find an independent shop that knows the dual-clutch gearboxes. On the test drive, creep forward and back in a parking lot a few times. Hesitation or a clunk from a stop is worth a scan before you sign anything.

History report and title checks

Lots of GLAs were leased, so you will see one-owner cars with tidy service at a dealer and then a gap after lease return. Check title brands for free on NMVTIS, then read a full history report for accidents, odometer readings, and service. The CARFAX vehicle history report page lists what those reports cover. Be wary of a seller's PDF that shows up as a phone screenshot; we've seen accident pages trimmed off. CarVins sells CARFAX and AutoCheck as a licensed reseller and is not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian, or Mercedes-Benz. Pricing as of this week sits around $5.50 for one report as a guest, about $4.50 for members, and roughly $6.75 for both brands, versus $39.99-$44.99 at retail. Those numbers move, so confirm at checkout.
