A used Volvo XC60 is the compact two-row Volvo SUV, so the year split still matters: 2010-2017 first-generation trucks versus the 2018-and-newer SPA redesign with Pilot Assist hardware and a calmer cabin. Most shoppers should clear seat-rail, tailgate and rearview-camera campaigns by VIN before they talk about Polestar Engineered badges. Leave the three-row shopping to the XC90.
We pulled XC60 filings and review specs in mid October 2026. Car and Driver lists a 247-hp turbo 2.0-liter four with a 48-volt system on recent B5 trucks, an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive on the current gas lineup, and a separate T8 plug-in hybrid path reviewed on its own page. The cabin stays five seats. Decode the VIN with our Volvo VIN decoder, then compare the three-row sibling in our used Volvo XC90 buying guide without cloning that open. Clear campaigns with our NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough.
2010-2017 versus 2018 SPA and newer
The 2018 SPA redesign is the nicer daily driver for most families. Better seats, stronger safety kit and Pilot Assist lane-centering hardware separate it from the older XC60 that still works as cheap transport but feels a generation behind. Consumer Reports and MotorTrend cover the model line if you want ownership context after safety campaigns are closed. IIHS rates the 2024 XC60 if you want crash-test context. So, our take: a 2019-2024 B5 or equivalent gas truck with closed campaigns is the sweet spot for most buyers, while a clean late first-gen truck can still make sense if the price reflects older crash structures and thinner dealer support for aging parts.
Pilot Assist, engines and recalls
Pilot Assist is Volvo's lane-centering and adaptive-cruise helper, not a self-driving system. It needs clear lane markings and hands on the wheel. A seller who never updated camera or radar software can leave you with a grayed-out feature. NHTSA recall 19V-220 covers certain 2018-2019 XC60 and S90 vehicles whose front seat rail rear flange nuts may be missing, which can affect seat structure in a crash. 19V-046 covers certain 2018-2019 XC60 trucks whose power tailgate lifting arms can freeze and separate in cold weather. 25V-908 covers certain 2022-2025 XC60 vehicles (among a large Volvo set) whose rearview camera image may not display in reverse. Ask which outcome your VIN got and get the repair order with the VIN on it.
Look, a blank reverse camera on a compact luxury SUV is not a "dealer will flash it next month" purchase if you reverse out of a driveway every day. Plug-in T8 trucks need battery and software history on top of the gas checklist.
Title, history and price
XC60s show up as family haulers and corporate lease returns. A recall lookup will not tell you about flood wash or rolled odometers. Read ownership and accident lines carefully, and ask for a lift inspection focused on oil leaks, suspension bushings and the front camera path Pilot Assist depends on. CARFAX says its reports pull title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Honestly, a seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is worth nothing on a Volvo this size.
If you need three rows, stop shopping the XC60 and read the XC90 guide instead. The XC60 wins on garage length and daily efficiency, not on adult third-row space it never had. A Polestar Engineered badge adds suspension and powertrain spice, and it still needs the same camera and seat-rail printout as a base B5. Ask the selling dealer for a Volvo campaign screenshot dated the week you buy.
