Morgan Plus 8 Buying Guide: Chassis, Wood and V8

Buy a Morgan Plus 8 on chassis and wood condition first. Frames built before serious rust-proofing, damp ash and neglected sliding pillars turn a charming V8 roadster into a full rebuild faster than low mileage suggests.

For this November 5, 2026 guide I read Hagerty UK: Morgan Plus 8 buyer's guide and Classic & Sports Car: Morgan Plus 8 buyer's guide. The mechanical cautions below come from those pages; the order of checks and the questions for the seller are my practical recommendations. Any price examples in those sources are market snapshots, not a valuation of the car in front of you. So, compare it with recent sales of the same specification and condition.

Start under the car on the chassis rails

Hagerty UK says cars up to 1986 had minimal rust-proofing, so check main rails, crossmembers, brackets and suspension mounts along the whole length. Classic & Sports Car adds that neglected cars can need a chassis or body rebuild after surprisingly few miles. Tap and inspect rather than trusting paint. Photograph every repair.

Inspect the ash frame where you can see it

Hagerty UK treats wood rot as a storage and damp story. Press suspect ends with a fingernail and watch door hinge pillars for twist when the door moves. Classic & Sports Car notes Cuprinol treatment arrived around 1986. Soft wood means section replacement with the body off. That labor dwarfs the cost of the timber.

Ask how the sliding pillars were oiled

Classic & Sports Car describes foot-pedal oiling that needed frequent attention, and Hagerty UK says bushes wear and a full suspension refresh is common every 25,000 miles or so. Steering that is excessively stiff can mean missed servicing. Note play and leaks. Later rack-and-pinion cars from 1986 are easier to live with.

Read the V8 oil and cooling story

Classic & Sports Car says the Buick-Rover V8 runs on modest hot oil pressure and that mayonnaise under the filler can point to head-gasket trouble. It also warns the alloy V8 will silt a radiator if inhibitor levels slip. Watch the temperature gauge on a full drive. Ask for cooling-system invoices.

Test the gearbox you are actually buying

Early Moss and Rover boxes differ from later five-speeds, and Classic & Sports Car says a worn gearbox spoils the car. Hagerty UK prefers injected cars from 1984 onward for ease of starting. Confirm which unit is fitted against the paperwork. A transplant is fine if disclosed and working.

Budget for hood, sidescreens and alloys

Classic & Sports Car says hoods and sidescreens should fit and stay dry, and alloys need inspection. Its UK price bands of roughly 20,000 to 50,000-plus pounds are dated. Hagerty UK likewise quotes UK figures as of its March 2025 guide. Check recent U.S. sales of the same year and engine before you bid.

Prove the identity before a deposit

Match the chassis number on the Plus 8 to the title, any import papers and the plate on the car before you order a history report. Our VIN verification guide walks through that match, and imported-car report coverage sets expectations for cars that spent years overseas. Older chassis numbers may sit outside modern report databases, so confirm coverage before paying. NMVTIS covers U.S. title history only; it cannot replace foreign records or a physical inspection.

Get the repair scope in writing first

A certain level of shake on rough pavement is normal on these cars, but excessive shudder can point to a weakened structure that needs a body and chassis rebuild. Ask a Morgan specialist to separate expected firmness from structural trouble before you fall for a low asking price.

If the chassis rails or ash pillars are soft, get a Morgan specialist's rebuild estimate before negotiating the rest. Look, a seller PDF or a folder of photos is a starting document, not independent proof of condition. Ask the inspector for written findings with local estimates, split into safety work and cosmetic wishes. The NYC consumer-agency used-car guidance tells buyers to have an independent mechanic check the car, and our pre-purchase inspection checklist helps you set the scope.

We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Guest reports have been about $5.50, member reports about $4.50 and a two-report bundle about $6.75; confirm the price at checkout because it can change. A report can miss unreported work, so keep the inspection appointment even when the history looks quiet.
