Reliant Scimitar Buying Guide: Chassis Before Glassfibre

A Scimitar can look fine while the steel chassis underneath is soft. Glassfibre bodywork will not rust, but chassis rot around outriggers and suspension mounts can make repair uneconomic.

For this November 5, 2026 guide, I used the Classic and Sports Car Scimitar GTE buyer guide and the Hagerty UK Scimitar GTE/GTC buying guide. So, the inspection points below follow those features.

Know the GTE package

Classic and Sports Car describes a steel tubular chassis under glassfibre bodywork, with Ford V6 power across SE5 and later SE6 families, and notes about 14,273 cars built from 1968 to 1986. Confirm if you are looking at an earlier SE5/SE5a or a roomier SE6/SE6a/SE6b before comparing prices.

Inspect the chassis on a lift

Both guides warn that the steel frame rusts. Hagerty UK says rot is most obvious in chassis outriggers, beneath the radiator and around front and rear suspension mounts, and to check the upper faces as well as the underside. Classic and Sports Car says chassis rot can render repair uneconomic.

Read the glassfibre carefully

Classic and Sports Car notes that glassfibre will not rust, but impact damage and flexing cause crazing that is expensive to fix, and a respray can cost more than on steel. Hagerty UK adds star cracks in the gelcoat around hinges as a warning. Look past shine to stressed corners.

Check the Ford V6 and cooling

Classic and Sports Car calls the Ford V6 durable when serviced, and to look for oil breathing, knocks and fuel-system care. Hagerty UK covers cooling upgrades on later cars. Watch temperature in traffic and ask for cooling invoices.

Test gearbox and overdrive

Classic and Sports Car says Ford automatics on SE6 cars are more durable than earlier Borg-Warner 35 units, which often need rebuilding by about 60,000 miles, and to check overdrive engagement where fitted. A slipping or harsh auto is a negotiation point.

Confirm trim and identity

Hagerty UK notes that missing exterior chrome can be hard to replace. Match badges and chassis plates to the claimed model, and ask for Middlebridge or specialist invoices if the car has later work.

Use the history report for the right questions

Read title brands, dated odometer entries and changes of registration state before looking at service entries. Compare those events with the seller file and ask about gaps; a Scimitar that sat for decades can show long silences that are normal, while a sudden mileage drop is not. The federal NMVTIS program explains its title, salvage and junk data role; it does not replace a workshop inspection. Our rust-and-history explainer helps you separate a recorded conflict from proof of a particular fault.

Keep ownership paperwork separate from condition

Match the seller name to the title and request a written lien release where needed. Our lien-release checks explains the paperwork sequence. Federal odometer disclosure rules are summarized at Cornell LII, though older vehicles can be exempt from some disclosure requirements, so the absence of a mileage statement is not proof of anything by itself. Our imported-car history explainer covers what a missing service entry can and cannot tell you.

Set the offer after the inspection

Ask for separate estimates for safety work, overdue servicing and cosmetic improvements. A hypothetical $1,500 repair reserve is only a planning example; it can be inadequate on an older collector vehicle. A seller PDF can be edited, so obtain your own report using the identifier stamped on the vehicle. A seller PDF of a tidy underside is not a substitute for your own lift photos of the outriggers.

We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Recent advertised pricing has been about $5.50 guest, $4.50 member or $6.75 for a bundle; confirm the price and included reports at checkout. Buy the report before committing, then keep it with the inspection findings and signed sale documents.

Ask for lift photos of the chassis outriggers and suspension mounts, rather than glossy body shots alone.

Book the inspection with a shop that has worked on this model before, and ask for a written report with photographs from underneath. Agree in advance who pays for the visit and what happens to your deposit if the findings are serious.

If the glassfibre shows star cracks around hinges, budget a specialist body opinion before you travel far.
