Used Rivian R1T Buying Guide: Packs, Motors and Recalls

A used Rivian R1T is a 2022-on Illinois-built electric pickup sold first as Launch Edition and Adventure quad-motor trucks, then with dual-motor and larger battery options in later years. For a daily adventure truck we would shop a 2023-2024 Large or Max pack only after upper-control-arm, accelerator and defroster campaigns are closed by VIN. On any 2022 Launch Edition, proving the early hardware remedies are done is the first job, ahead of tonneau and tire talk.

We checked Rivian recall filings, review notes and vPIC decodes on October 14, 2026. A 2022 Launch Edition pattern starting 7FCTGAAL decoded to Normal, Illinois as an R1T AWD BEV pickup, and an Adventure pattern 7FCTGAAA came back the same plant with Adventure trim. Decode yours with our Rivian VIN decoder, clear campaigns with our Rivian recall check by VIN walkthrough, and if you want a gas-truck benchmark read the used Ford F-150 buying guide.

2022 Launch year vs later packs

Car and Driver tested early R1T trucks as quick quad-motor pickups with a roughly 314-mile EPA claim on Launch Edition Large packs, and later covered 2024 trucks with Standard, Large and Max packs rated around 270, 352 and 410 miles depending on configuration. C/D also measured real highway range well below sticker when towing or when the truck wore all-terrain tires. MotorTrend and Consumer Reports cover the same truck as a lifestyle EV pickup with a gear tunnel and a frunk. Dual-motor Enduro trucks arrived after the first quad-motor year, so read the window sticker and the Rivian build sheet instead of assuming every R1T is a quad.

Control arm, pedal and defroster recalls

22V-744 covers 2022 R1T, R1S and EDV vehicles whose front upper control arm fastener can be inadequately tightened. 23V-883 covers 2022 R1T and R1S trucks whose accelerator pedal may not detect a release. Defroster and defogger software deactivation after an update sits under 23V-783 on 2022-2023 R1T and R1S vehicles. Occupant classification issues on early trucks show up under 22V-319, and headlight aim campaigns include 24V-367 on certain 2023-2024 trucks. Ask for the Rivian service printout on that VIN, not a verbal "OTA fixed everything."

Title, adventure use and price

A recall screen will not show a flood title, an odometer rollback or a prior off-road thrashing. Look, a seller PDF with no VIN on the page is not a history report. Many early R1Ts lived hard on forest roads and ski trips, so read the ownership lines and inspect the underbody. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. What we would actually bid on

Honestly, a 2023 or 2024 Large-pack dual-motor or quad with closed control-arm and pedal campaigns, one or two private owners and a clean title is the easy path. A 2022 Launch Edition can still be fine after Rivian closes the early hardware work, but only if the dealer paperwork names this VIN. Skip any truck whose seller wants you to "just live without defrost until the next OTA" without showing 23V-783 is closed. We've seen listings that boast Max pack range and stay silent on open campaigns. Confirm remaining high-voltage battery warranty dates in writing, and check 12-volt battery health on the test drive because a dead 12V bricks more EV pickups than people admit.

One more check before you leave the lot: open the gear tunnel, cycle the tonneau if fitted, and confirm Driver+ cameras are clean and online. Early trucks collected enough suspension and software campaigns that a quiet driveway inspection is cheap insurance next to a six-figure asking price.
