The Scion iQ is tiny, discontinued and often neglected. Clear the air bag recall and read the history before you buy.

Used Scion iQ Buying Guide (2012-2015): Tiny Car, Real Checks

A used Scion iQ makes sense only if the air bag recall is closed, the body is solid, and the title and mileage history hold together. Toyota sold the iQ under the Scion brand in the U.S. for the 2012 through 2015 model years, then dropped both the model and, later, the Scion name. These cars are cheap city runabouts, which means they collect curb rash, short trips and owners who skip maintenance.

What you are buying

The iQ is a microcar with seating for three or four depending on how you read the brochure, a 1.3L four-cylinder, and a CVT in U.S. form. It is short enough to fit in spaces other cars skip, and that is the whole appeal. Crash protection and highway manners are not in the same league as a modern compact, so check IIHS before you put a new driver in one. Decode the VIN with NHTSA vPIC to confirm year and plant, since some ads mislabel iQ EV show cars or foreign-market cars that never belonged here.

Expect a firm ride, a lot of wind noise on the highway, and a cargo area that fills up after one grocery run. That is normal for the class. What is not normal is a check-engine light the seller calls a sensor, a CVT that flares between gears, or rust eating the rear arches. Those are negotiation killers or walk-away reasons.

The recall that still matters

When I pulled NHTSA data on Nov. 5, 2026, the 2012 and 2013 Scion iQ returned campaign 12V528000: the cable reel assembly (clock spring) for the driver air bag can break, which can light the air bag warning lamp and disable the bag. Later U.S. years did not return that campaign in my model-year search, but you still run the VIN. Use our Scion recall check by VIN and Toyota's owner tools after Scion closed, since Toyota dealers handle the brand now. Our open recall on CARFAX explains what a report shows when a campaign is still open.

If the air bag light is on during your test drive, treat that as a live safety issue, not a $20 bulb. Ask for the repair invoice with the VIN on it if the seller says the recall was done.

Inspection points on a car this small

Look at the front fascia, alloy wheels and rocker panels first. City parking eats these cars alive. Then check for rust at the rear wheel arches and under the battery tray, and make sure the CVT shifts without flare. A rough idle can be plugs or a vacuum leak; a hybrid it is not, so do not let a seller talk past a check-engine light with hybrid jargon. So, pay for a shop look. The usual range in our pre-purchase inspection cost guide is small next to one wrong guess on a CVT.

Sit in every seat you plan to use. The rear is for short trips only for most adults. Check that the windows, locks and A/C all work, because labor on a tiny cabin can still cost real money. Scan for aftermarket amplifiers that cut into wiring the next owner will regret.

Before you travel to see the car, ask for the windshield VIN in a photo that includes the dash, then run your own history report and a free NHTSA recall check. Compare the VIN characters to the door sticker and the title when you arrive. If any character differs, stop. Sellers who rush you past that step are not doing you a favor.

History report habits for a discontinued Scion

Reports can be thin if the car stayed with one owner who used independent shops. Focus on title brands, odometer readings and any total-loss events. Compare brands with NMVTIS. If the car bounced through several owners in two years, ask why. A fake seller PDF is common on cheap marketplace cars; pull your own report and read Craigslist fake report scams if the meet feels rushed. Rental or car-share history, when it appears, usually means hard city miles rather than highway touring.

Also compare the asking price to local comps that disclose accidents. An iQ with a repaired side hit can be fine if the structure is straight, but it should not price like an untouched one-owner garage queen.

When to walk

Walk from an open clock-spring recall, a title that is not in the seller's name, structural rust, or a price that assumes the car is a collectible when it is a worn city car. The iQ is a tool, not a trophy. Walk as well if the seller will only meet in a parking lot and will not show a title or registration that matches.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
