Used Smart Fortwo Buying Guide: Years, Recalls and Title Checks

A used Smart Fortwo is a fair city car only if the structure is sound, the open recalls are closed, and the title history is clean. Smart sold the Fortwo in the U.S. in two main waves, with the first-generation 451 cars arriving for 2008 and a redesigned car later, including electric versions. Mercedes-Benz USA handled many of the later campaigns, and the brand's U.S. retail footprint has been thin for years, so recall work and parts take planning.

Which Fortwo you are looking at

Coupe and cabrio bodies both exist, with a rear-mounted engine in the gas cars and a rear motor in the electrics. Decode the VIN with NHTSA vPIC and match the model year to the ad. FuelEconomy.gov lists EPA figures that look great on paper; real city mpg still depends on how hard the tiny car is driven. Crash protection is a known tradeoff at this size, so read IIHS before you share the car with a teen driver.

Automated-manual gearboxes on early cars feel nothing like a conventional automatic. That is often normal; grinding, slipping or a car that will not engage a gear is not. Electric versions need a different checklist around charging history and high-voltage warnings. Do not shop them as if they were the same car with a different badge.

Recalls NHTSA returned in my Nov. 5, 2026 checks

  • 08V390000: a small batch of 2008 cars with paint that did not meet specs after a rework step, which can hide corrosion.
  • 18V273000: 2008-2009 coupe and cabrio cars where a rear insulation mat can contact the exhaust and create a fire risk.
  • 17V448000: 2016 cars where a parking-brake lock nut can loosen.
  • 17V447000: 2017 cars with casting issues that can affect steering.
  • 20V107000: one 2019 Electric Drive car with a high-voltage battery weld concern.

Run the VIN rather than trusting a year list. Our Smart recall check by VIN covers the lookup path, and open recall on CARFAX explains how reports display campaigns after a brand's dealer network shrinks. Keep written proof of completed campaigns; a shrunk dealer network makes verbal "it was done" claims harder to verify later.

What to inspect

Start with the tridion safety cell and the plastic body panels. Panel gaps that do not match, or paint that looks fresh only on one corner, can mean a hit the report never caught. Check the rear for exhaust heat damage on early cars, and test the parking brake on a hill. Transmission behavior on automated manuals can feel odd even when healthy, so have a shop that has seen Smarts decide what is normal. Honestly, many Fortwos live hard curb lives; look at the wheels and undertray before you fall for a low price.

Book a pre-purchase inspection. On electrics, ask for a battery state-of-health readout if the seller has one, and treat a high-voltage warning light as a stop sign. Cabrio tops need a careful water test; a wet carpet after a short hose spray is a real problem in a cabin this small.

Before you travel to see the car, ask for the windshield VIN in a photo that includes the dash, then run your own history report and a free NHTSA recall check. Compare the VIN characters to the door sticker and the title when you arrive. If any character differs, stop. Sellers who rush you past that step are not doing you a favor.

History and title

Title brands, odometer jumps and flood-area registrations matter more than a long list of oil changes. Cross-check with NMVTIS. A tiny car priced like a novelty collectible with a salvage brand under the paint is a bad deal. Read title washing if the car changed states after a claim. Insurance total-loss events sometimes appear only as a brand; dig into the dates and ask for repair photos when the gap in the report is large.

City cars also attract cloned VINs and title-skipping curb sales. Our VIN cloning guide is worth a skim if the paperwork feels thinner than the asking price.

When to walk

Walk from an open exhaust-mat or steering recall, bent structure, a seller who will not show the title, or an electric car with battery faults and no diagnosis. Quirky is fine. Unsafe is not.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
