A total-loss payout is usually the insurer's actual cash value (ACV) for your car minus your deductible, not the price of a brand-new replacement, so you need to read the valuation worksheet before you sign, not after the check is cashed. The Texas Department of Insurance auto insurance claims guide describes actual cash value as the cost to replace your car minus depreciation. State total-loss thresholds also matter; our total-loss threshold guide covers when a car is declared a total. Ask for the comps and condition notes in writing as of your claim date.
What ACV means on a used car
ACV is what the car would have sold for just before the loss, in similar condition and mileage. It is not what you paid, not what you still owe, and not the cost to buy a new model. Our CARFAX total loss guide covers how a prior total can still show on a report later. If the offer feels low, ask which trim, options and recent sales the software used.
How the payout is built
Most personal-auto settlements start with ACV, subtract the deductible, then add or withhold items your state requires, such as taxes or fees on some policies. If you still owe a lender, the check may go to the lienholder first. Our total-loss buyback guide covers keeping a totaled car when the insurer allows it. Gap coverage, when you have it, pays the loan shortfall, not an extra ACV bump; see our GAP insurance guide. We've seen buyers confuse the loan payoff with ACV and think the insurer underpaid when the loan was simply larger than the car's value.
What to do with a low offer
Ask for the valuation report, correct wrong trim or mileage, and send your own comps from local listings with dates close to the loss. Keep photos of the car before the loss if you have them, including the odometer and any recent repair receipts. The CFPB auto loan tools help when a loan balance and a settlement collide. Do not scrap the car until you decide on buyback and title branding, because a salvage brand follows the VIN through NMVTIS afterward.
Owner-retained salvage and the title
If you keep the car, the insurer usually subtracts salvage value from the ACV and the state may brand the title salvage or rebuilt after repairs. That brand changes resale and future insurance. Our prior total loss clean title guide covers cars that later look clean on paper. Ask the DMV which brand your state will print before you agree to keep it.
Questions for your adjuster
- What comparable sales and condition adjustments set this ACV?
- Is the payout ACV minus deductible, and are taxes or fees added back in my state?
- Can I see the valuation worksheet in writing?
- If I keep the car, what is the owner-retained salvage deduction?
Before money changes hands
Run the VIN at the NHTSA recall lookup, pull a history report and confirm any old loan is paid off; our lien release guide covers that step. On anything out of warranty, a pre-purchase inspection costs far less than a surprise repair. Pay by a traceable method and get a dated receipt with the VIN on it.
Reading the history report
Read the title section first: any salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon brand changes the value more than anything else. Then line up the odometer readings by date and look for gaps or drops, and check the states where the car was registered. An approved NMVTIS check adds insurer and salvage-yard records. Our odometer discrepancy guide explains odd mileage entries.
Paperwork to keep
Keep the bill of sale, the signed title or a copy of it, the odometer statement, any Buyers Guide and every payoff or lien letter in one folder. Photograph the dash mileage and the VIN plate on the day the car changes hands. If a dispute comes up later, dated paperwork is what a DMV, an insurer or a court will ask for first.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
