A used Honda Prelude with four-wheel steering is worth buying after you verify the rear steering hardware and clear NHTSA campaigns on the VIN. Honda offered 4WS on certain late-1980s and early-1990s Preludes, and those systems need seals, sensors and alignment work that ordinary Preludes skip. When I queried NHTSA for Honda Prelude years on Nov. 5, 2026, campaigns included fuel filler pipe corrosion (92V028001), seat-belt buckle buttons (95V103001), 1988 power-steering hose and accelerator issues, plus several aftermarket lighting equipment recalls on 1992-1996 years. Open 4WS leaks plus a thin seller PDF is a bad stack.
Which Prelude are you looking at?
Not every Prelude is 4WS. Confirm rear steering arms, the 4WS switch or indicator and generation-correct parts before you pay a premium. Our used Honda Prelude buying guide covers the broader model, and the Honda VIN decoder helps confirm year and market.
What NHTSA returned on Nov. 5, 2026
From the NHTSA recalls API for Honda Prelude:
- 92V028001 (1983-1987 listed): fuel filler and/or breather pipe plastic coating damage that can allow salt-water corrosion.
- 95V103001 (1986-1991): front seat-belt buckle release buttons that can break.
- 88V059000 (1988): power steering supply hose leak risk from vibration and heat.
- 89V097000 / 89V093000 (1988): accelerator pedal stopper and front seat anchorage campaigns.
- 08E050000, 06E060000, 06E049000, 06E026000: aftermarket headlamp and combination-lamp equipment recalls on later Prelude years.
Run the VIN at NHTSA, then read NHTSA versus CARFAX.
Mechanical checks that matter
Operate 4WS at low speed and watch rear toe change. Look for fluid leaks at the rear steering actuator and check belt, timing and rust at shock towers. A Honda indie lift inspection is cheaper than chasing 4WS parts; see pre-purchase inspection cost.
Reading the history report
Enthusiast Preludes attract rolled clusters and washed titles when prices rise. Look for salvage brands, auction rows and mileage that jumps backward. Use our odometer rollback guide and watch for title washing.
When to walk away
- The VIN on the dash, door jamb and title do not match.
- 4WS badges without working rear steering hardware.
- Open fuel-pipe or seat-belt campaigns with no repair plan.
- Seller blocks a lift look on a high asking price.
Questions to ask the seller
- How long have you owned it, and which shops did the 4WS and timing work?
- Any flood history, salvage brands or airbag deployments?
- Can I take the car to an independent Honda shop before money moves?
How to price a Prelude 4WS
A documented four-wheel-steering Prelude with belt and steering invoices sits far from a "4WS" caption on a car that steers only up front. Compare generation and steering hardware, then subtract deferred pump and rust work. Aftermarket lamp campaigns do not prove the factory chassis is clear.
4WS parts reality before you fall for the badge
Rear steering actuators, sensors and fluid are not aisle-three items at every chain store. Ask who last bled the system and whether the car tracks straight at highway speed. Honestly, we have seen Prelude ads that advertise 4WS while the rear links are locked or missing.
A short test drive that never loads the rear steer will not catch the problem. Have a Honda indie put the car on a rack and operate the system through its range. If the seller will not allow that, the premium is not yours to pay. Buy your own history report so auction and brand rows are not filtered by the listing.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
Parts scarcity is the quiet cost of a working 4WS Prelude. Before you bid, call two Honda specialists and ask what a rear actuator job runs in your area. If nobody will quote it, you are buying a project whether the ad says so or not.
Compare that quote to the discount you want off asking price. A pretty paint job does not pay for steering parts. Walk if the numbers only work when you pretend the 4WS will never need service.
