Used Isuzu Trooper Buying Guide (1998-2002): What to Check

A 1998-2002 Isuzu Trooper is a decent cheap 4x4 if the VIN clears NHTSA, the 4WD system works, and the frame is not rotted. On Nov. 5, 2026, NHTSA listed 98V180000 for 1998 Troopers, where transfer case flange nuts were not installed properly and can loosen, and two 2000 campaigns (00V253000 and 00V376000) for fuel leaks in high-speed frontal crashes on 4WD automatics with Torque-On-Demand. The 2002 model year returned no campaigns. Isuzu stopped selling passenger vehicles in the U.S. years ago, so parts and dealer recall support are the questions to answer before money changes hands.

The second-generation Trooper in brief

The Trooper sold in the U.S. through the 2002 model year. Late trucks use a 3.5L V6, and many have a four-speed automatic with Isuzu's Torque-On-Demand (TOD) four-wheel-drive system, which can send power to the front axle automatically. It is a body-on-frame SUV with real off-road ability and a roomy, boxy cabin. Because Isuzu left the passenger market, a lot of Troopers changed hands cheap and were used as farm trucks, hunting rigs and project builds. You can find good ones, but you have to look harder.

Recalls and how to clear them

The 1998 transfer case campaign matters because a loose flange nut on a 4WD driveline is not something you want to discover on a trail or highway. The two 2000 campaigns both involve fuel leaks in frontal crashes on TOD trucks with automatic transmissions, one from movement of engine compartment parts and one where an interior fuel line and hose can separate. Run the full VIN through NHTSA, then see our Isuzu recall check by VIN for what to do when the brand has no local dealer. GM-affiliated and Isuzu commercial dealers sometimes handle old campaigns, but call first and ask.

What to inspect on an old Trooper

Get under it. Frame rust near the rear spring mounts and crossmembers is the deal-breaker on salt-belt trucks. Check for oil leaks, listen for valvetrain noise on the V6, and look at the oil on the dipstick for sludge. Engage 4WD and drive it on gravel or a wet surface if you can; a TOD system that throws a light or binds is an expensive fix on a truck this cheap. Look at the transfer case for leaks and, given the recall, for signs that the flange nuts were ever touched. A pre-purchase inspection on a lift is the best $150 you will spend.

So, also ask how the truck was used. Towing, plowing and off-road trips are fine if maintenance kept up, but each one shortens the life of the transmission and driveline.

Title and mileage history

Old 4x4s are flood candidates, since people drive them through water. Look for flood or salvage brands, registrations in hurricane-hit areas, and a gap followed by a new title in a different state. Compare with NMVTIS and check the decode at NHTSA vPIC. Many of these trucks have high mileage, and some older odometer records are thin. If the report shows a mileage drop, read our odometer rollback guide and ask the seller about any cluster swap.

Living with one after you buy

Plan for parts sourcing before you need it. Many mechanical parts for the V6 and drivetrain still turn up through aftermarket suppliers and salvage yards, but trim pieces, interior panels and some sensors take longer to find. Join an owner group or find a 4x4 shop that already works on old Isuzus, and ask them what they stock. Do the overdue maintenance in the first month: fluids in the engine, transmission, transfer case and both differentials, plus belts and hoses if there are no receipts. Budget at least a few hundred dollars for that, more if the brakes or tires are tired.

Insurance on an older SUV is usually cheap, but some insurers price rollover risk on tall, narrow vehicles. Get a quote with the VIN before you agree on a price. If you plan to register it in a state with emissions testing, ask the seller for the last passing result, since a failed test on an old V6 can mean catalytic converter work.

When to pass

Pass on a Trooper with a rotted frame, an inoperative 4WD system, a branded title the seller did not mention, or an open fuel-leak recall that no shop will touch. Pass on a seller who will not put the truck on a lift. Look, there are plenty of tired Troopers listed for not much, and a cheap price is not a deal if the frame needs welding.

What the report costs

A Trooper often sells for less than a set of good tires, which is exactly why the paperwork gets skipped. A single CARFAX bought direct has usually listed around $44.99 this fall, with AutoCheck in a similar range. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian; guest pricing here has run about $5.50 a report, members about $4.50, with bundles priced per pack. Those numbers change, so confirm the price at checkout before you pay.
