Used Lincoln Town Car Buying Guide: Livery Miles and Recalls

The used Lincoln Town Car to buy is a 2003-2011 car with a private-owner history, not a retired black car with livery miles hidden behind a fresh detail. Those years got the reworked frame, suspension and steering and the 239-hp V8. Before money changes hands, confirm the 2005-2011 steering shaft corrosion recall, read the history report line by line for fleet, livery or commercial use, and check that the odometer story makes sense for a car this old.

I ran every model year from 1998 to 2011 through NHTSA's recall API on Sunday night, October 18, 2026, and read Consumer Guide's two used-car files, the IIHS ratings and a few news pieces from the year production ended. One number stuck with me. The Hollywood Reporter wrote in 2011 that Lincoln sold 7,882 Town Cars for the 2011 model year, about 90 percent of them to fleet operators. So on a late car, a fleet past is closer to the default than the exception.

The two generations most people shop

1998-2002. Consumer Guide says the 1998 redesign cut nearly 200 pounds. The 4.6-liter V8 made 200 hp in Executive and Signature trim and 220 hp with the dual exhausts on Cartier and Signature Touring, and every engine gained 25 hp for 2001. All had a four-speed automatic, traction control and a front bench; front side airbags became standard for 1999. Its trouble list leads with intake manifolds on 1998-2001 cars that can crack and dump coolant, which Consumer Guide says Ford addressed by reimbursing owners up to $735 and extending the warranty for others. Heater core leaks and a serpentine belt that slips off in wet weather (2001-02) also show up.

2003-2011. The 2003 car got a revamped frame and suspension, a different steering system, 17-inch wheels and a standard 239-hp dual-exhaust V8. Front side airbags were standard, but curtain airbags were never offered. The long-wheelbase versions, sold as Ultimate L and later Signature L, add six inches, and Consumer Guide measured 46.9 inches of rear legroom. IIHS rates 2003-11 models built after May 2003 Good in its original moderate overlap frontal test, after Lincoln changed the airbag deployment following a first test where the dummy's head hit the B-pillar. That makes the build month on the door label worth checking on a 2003.

Later-car trouble spots

  • Engine ticking at idle on 2003-04 4.6 V8s that may need a cylinder head and camshaft assembly.
  • Blower motor speed problems (2003-04) and radiator fan motor failures that can overheat the engine or weaken the A/C (2006-07).
  • Soft launches from a torque converter clutch check ball in the valve body (2005-06).
  • Water in the trunk when the lid opens (2006-09) and rear wheel chatter in tight turns from the limited-slip clutch pack (2003-05).

Recalls, including the livery ones

13V385 covers 2005-2011 cars sold or registered in a list of salt states, including Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where corrosion can seize the lower intermediate steering shaft and lead to loss of steering. 14V704 follows up on cars repaired under 13V385 whose repair may not have been done correctly. 05V518 covers a 2005 battery cable fusible link that can chafe and start a fire, and 07V270 a 2007 front wheel hub that can fracture. 04V328 shows up for 2003: Ford's recall for police, commercial and fleet cars whose higher loads can overload rear wheel bearings and axles. Stretch limos have their own campaigns, such as 10V638 from Executive Coach for a missing fuel rail shield on 2008-2011 Town Car limousines. The API returned nothing for 2004, so check that year by VIN with our Lincoln recall check by VIN guide.

Reading a Town Car history report

Automobile Magazine's "Last Call for the Lincoln Town Car" quoted a New York black-car driver whose last three Town Cars went 377,000, 370,000 and 300,000 miles. Those cars don't vanish. They get resold. When a report shows corporate or commercial registration, a livery or taxi flag, or long registration gaps followed by a big mileage jump, slow down. Our guides to taxi and livery use on CARFAX and CARFAX odometer discrepancies explain what those entries mean. A clean, low-mile car with a rear seat that looks more worn than the driver's seat tells its own story.

Town Car or Grand Marquis?

They share Ford's body-on-frame Panther layout, the 4.6 V8 and the 2005-2011 steering shaft recalls. IIHS notes the Grand Marquis ended after 2010, so the Town Car runs a year longer, and the Globe and Mail reported the final Town Car came off the St. Thomas, Ontario line in August 2011. Our used Mercury Grand Marquis buying guide covers the Mercury twin, which deserves the same fleet questions. Confirm trim and wheelbase with our Lincoln VIN decoder walkthrough.

Checking it yourself

Search NMVTIS for title brands, then buy a report yourself instead of using the one in the seller's folder.
