A used Saturn Outlook is a 2007-2010 GMC Acadia with Saturn badges, so you get a roomy seven- or eight-seat crossover with a 3.6 V6 for less money than the GMC. The main mechanical worry is the timing chain: GM ran a special coverage program for premature chain wear on 2007 and 2009 Outlooks, and that coverage has expired on every one of them. So budget for a chain job unless the seller can show it was done, and clear the liftgate strut and seat belt cable recalls by VIN.
I pulled NHTSA's Outlook recall list for 2007 through 2010, GM's timing chain bulletin and Consumer Guide's 2007-10 Saturn Outlook review on Sunday, October 18, 2026. A lot of what matters on this vehicle won't be on a history report, and I'll point those spots out as I go.
What the Outlook is
Every Outlook has a 3.6-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic, with front drive or all-wheel drive without low range. Consumer Guide lists 270 hp on the XE and 275 hp on the XR through 2008, then 281 and 288 hp for 2009. Eight seats were standard, and the XR offered second-row buckets for seven. Curtain air bags for all three rows and stability control were standard from the start. For 2008, AWD models got a new on-demand system and brake assist became standard. The review praises the cargo room, quiet cabin and a third row adults can use for real trips. It's also nearly as long as a full-size SUV, with a big turning circle, and a test 2WD XE averaged 16.0 mpg in mostly city driving.
The timing chain, and why a report won't show it
GM's Special Coverage 11340C from November 2012 says some 2007 and 2009 Outlooks with the 3.6 V6 could wear their timing chains prematurely "with the vehicle's original oil change intervals," turning on the Service Engine Soon light. Dealers replaced the chain, or reprogrammed the engine computer if the chain was OK, for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original in-service date. Even a late 2009 is past that now. The 2008 and 2010 model years aren't on the bulletin's list, which doesn't prove they're immune. Consumer Guide also lists chain stretch as a check engine cause on 2007 cars.
A CARFAX or AutoCheck report may show service visits, but it rarely shows what was done in enough detail to confirm a chain job. Ask for the repair order. If there isn't one, have a mechanic scan for timing correlation codes and listen to a cold start. Short oil change intervals in the records are a good sign. Long gaps are a bad one.
Other trouble spots
Consumer Guide's list includes water dripping from the dome light or a wet headliner on 2007-2009 cars because of sunroof drains or the sunroof gasket, so press on the headliner and smell the carpet. It also lists popping from the front strut boots on 2007s, clunks in turns from steering gear bushings through 2010, and on some 2007 cars a transmission control module fault that can cap the engine at 4,000 rpm and knock out accessories after a cold soak.
Recalls to clear by VIN
- 15V415, 2007-2010: on cars with the power liftgate, the gas struts can wear out and let the open liftgate fall.
- 14V266, 2009-2010: the flexible steel cable that anchors the front outboard seat belts can fatigue and separate.
- 14V118, 2008-2010: resistance in the seat-mounted side air bag wiring can keep those air bags and the belt pretensioners from deploying.
- 09V073, 2009: the shift cable clip may not be fully engaged, so the lever can read Park when the transmission isn't in Park.
- 07V062, 2007: the module that controls the front air bags may not work, and the warning lamp may not tell you.
- 08V441 and 10V240, 2007-2009: the heated washer fluid system can short and overheat. 08V410, 2007-2008: in cold-weather states, packed snow can knock the wiper linkage loose from the motor.
The 2009 list also has 08V615 (a second- or third-row buckle missing a rivet) and 10V375 (a trim shield that can catch the second-row buckle). Use our Saturn recall check by VIN walkthrough or pull NHTSA's Outlook data, and our Saturn VIN decoder guide to confirm the year and drive layout.
Outlook, Acadia, Traverse or Enclave?
GM's recall filings lump all four together, which tells you how much hardware they share. Our used GMC Acadia guide and used Chevy Traverse guide cover those trucks into their later years, which the Outlook never reached. If a clean Outlook is priced well below a same-year Acadia, you're paying less for the badge, since the engine and transmission are the same.
Buying a car from a brand that closed
GM said on September 30, 2009 that it would close Saturn and wind down its dealer network after Penske Automotive walked away from buying the brand, and CNBC reported about 350 dealerships would close. The engine and drivetrain parts you're likely to need are shared with the GMC and Chevy versions. Outlook-only trim, grilles and lamps are where you may end up shopping salvage yards, which is also why you should look closely at any Outlook with a repaired front end.
Pull a report before the test drive
Check NMVTIS for title brands first. Then pull your own report. A printout from the seller can be edited, and a three-row family hauler with a quiet accident is exactly the kind of car that gets one. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and aren't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or GM. Around mid October 2026, expect about $5.50 as a guest, about $4.50 as a member and around $6.75 for both reports, compared with about $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Prices can move, so the checkout total wins.
