If you're shopping a used Volvo XC70, start with the year, because the 2003-2007 and 2008-2016 cars are different wagons with different risks. Every 2003-2007 car is part of recall 21V800, where the driver's air bag inflator can explode, so don't buy one until a Volvo dealer confirms that air bag was replaced. On the newer cars, check the front seat belt cable recall, 20V378, and know which engine you're getting: a 3.2 six, a turbo T6, or, for 2015-2016, a front-drive 2.0 four or an all-wheel-drive turbo five.
I ran every XC70 model year from 2003 to 2016 through NHTSA's recall API on Sunday, October 18, 2026, and checked engines against Car and Driver, MotorTrend and Volvo's own 2016 model-year release. Volvo's site blocks our link checker, so I cite it without a link. If a car you're looking at has an accident on its report, the last section is for you.
Two generations, several engines
The early XC70 is the raised, cladded version of the second-generation V70, which MotorTrend dates to 2001. In its 2005 AWD wagon comparison, MotorTrend had a turbocharged five-cylinder XC70 beat V6 rivals in acceleration tests, rated it to tow 3,300 pounds and averaged 21 mpg. Its all-wheel drive is a Haldex system that sends about 95 percent of torque to the front until it detects wheelspin, then clutches in the rear axle.
The 2008 redesign moved to inline sixes. Car and Driver's 2009 XC70 T6 test lists the standard 235-hp 3.2-liter six and the optional 281-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter T6, both with a six-speed automatic. For 2015, Car and Driver reported a new front-drive T5 Drive-E with a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four, rated 24 city and 31 highway, while the 3.2 AWD and a 300-hp T6 AWD carried on. Volvo's September 2015 release says the 2016 lineup dropped both the 3.2 and the T6 and added a T5 AWD with a 250-hp 2.5-liter turbo five and a six-speed. So a 2016 XC70 is a front-drive four or an AWD five, and only the five has all-wheel drive. MotorTrend's V90 Cross Country launch story says that wagon filled the gap after Volvo discontinued the XC70.
Recalls to clear by VIN
- 21V800, 2003-2007: the driver's air bag inflator can explode during deployment because its propellant degrades after years of heat and humidity. NHTSA's record says dealers replace the air bag free, and that owner letters went out in December 2021.
- 09V483, 2003-2004: a fuel pump problem limited to cars sold or registered in a list of hot-climate states.
- 20V378, 2008-2016: the flexible steel cable connecting the front outboard seat belts can fatigue, so the belt may not hold you in a crash.
- 09V218, 2008-2009: fan control software can stop the engine cooling fan. 09V343, 2009-2010: a software fault can keep the fuel pump from getting its start signal.
- 10V489, 2010-2011: an intermittent fault in the driver's air bag clockspring connector. 07V500, 2008: software errors that can delay the curtain and side air bags.
Later years carry software and wiring campaigns, such as 10V579 for a 2011 fuel cut-off calibration, 13V377 for a 2014 module that can leave the wipers running, and 15V555 for a 2016 starter fuse that can blow with stop/start. Use our Volvo recall check by VIN walkthrough or open NHTSA's XC70 recall data. A list by model year can't tell you what's been done on a specific car. Only the VIN can.
When the report shows an accident
An accident entry isn't automatically a deal-breaker on a wagon that's 10 to 20 years old. Ask for the repair estimate or invoice, and look at what was replaced. If air bags deployed on a 2003-2007 car, find out what inflator went back in. If the damage was at a corner, have a shop check the alignment and look at the AWD hardware and wheel bearings on that side. Watch for an SRS light that stays on after startup. A seller who says "minor fender damage" and won't show paperwork is telling you something. Our post on what "accident reported" means on CARFAX explains how much the entry can and can't tell you.
XC70, V60 or XC60?
The XC70 is the largest of the three, a raised wagon that MotorTrend says was based on the S80 sedan. Our used Volvo V60 guide covers the smaller wagon, which is newer and has its own seat belt and camera software recalls. The used Volvo XC60 guide is the SUV route. The 2008-2016 XC70 and the first-generation XC60 share the 20V378 seat belt cable recall. Decode the car first with our Volvo VIN decoder guide so you know the engine before you price it.
Before you hand over money
Search NMVTIS for title brands, and pull a fresh report instead of trusting a PDF from the seller. A flooded car can be retitled in another state and sold a long way from the water. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, independent of CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian and Volvo. In mid October 2026, a guest report runs about $5.50, members pay around $4.50 and the two-report bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Whatever our checkout says is the final price.
